Story
For Iris, each visit to her mother in St Mabon’s Cove, Cornwall has been the same—a serene escape from the city. But today, as she breaths in the salt air on the doorstep of her beloved childhood home, a heavy weight of anticipation settles over her. Iris knows she’s adopted, but any questions about where she came from have always been shut down by her parents, who can’t bear to revisit the past. Now, Iris can’t stop thinking about what she’s read on the official paperwork: BABY GIRL, FRANCE, 1939 – the year war was declared with Nazi Germany.

Rather than remain idle, Smiley begins his own investigation into the nature of the man's demise.

wonderful history
Reviewed: 12-10-24
This was a terrific look into the lives of three incredible women who did so much during their lives to help others and make an impact on history. I got a little tired of the feeling thoughts on issues each time but could go past that. My only complaint is that it unnecessary to include in this story the feminine fatuation or feelings of Marte with Anna. Did nothing for the story and was annoying that author had to make this up when there was no purpose to the story. A long book but do recommend it. So much to learn about Lafayette that I did not know and of course his wife.!

Story
Everyone has a story to tell. But does Janice have the power to unlock her own? She can’t recall what started her collection. Maybe it was in a fragment of conversation overheard as she cleaned a sink? Before long (as she dusted a sitting room or defrosted a fridge) she noticed people were telling her their stories. Perhaps they had always done so, but now it is different, now the stories are reaching out to her and she gathers them to her.

Having lived through this era of the war in Nam this book really brought it all home. I was sad at times and cried and laughed. A wonderful insightful story told from three perspectives and such valuable lessons brought to light. Dugoni is a great writer of mysteries but this one tops them all. highly recommend.

After fleeing the wreck, Arthur knocked on the door of an isolated farmhouse, whose owners hastily took him in. Fortunately, his hosts not only despised the Nazis but had a tight connection to the French resistance group Morhange and its founder, Marcel Taillandier.
