Story
Shenequa Golding doesn’t aim to speak for all Black women. We’re too vast, too vibrant, and too complicated. As an adult, Golding begins to own her boldness, but growing up, she found herself “kind of in the middle,” fluctuating between not being the fly kid or the overachiever. Her debut collection of essays, A Black Girl in the Middle taps into life’s wins and losses, representing the middle ground for Black girls and women.

*A Black Girl In The Middle* is a light-hearted yet profound coming-of-age story that delves into the journey of maturing into self-love and embracing a no-nonsense approach to life. It serves as a humbling reminder of our mortality, emphasizing the importance of cherishing the time we have by learning to love ourselves, even when others can't love us for who we are. This narrative resonates deeply with Caribbean women and is relatable to women of all ages and backgrounds. The narrator for the Audible version is particularly captivating, adding an extra layer of warmth and authenticity to the story.

Story
Xiomara Batista feels unheard and unable to hide in her Harlem neighborhood. Ever since her body grew into curves, she has learned to let her fists and her fierceness do the talking. But Xiomara has plenty she wants to say, and she pours all her frustration and passion onto the pages of a leather notebook, reciting the words to herself like prayers - especially after she catches feelings for a boy in her bio class named Aman, whom her family can never know about.

A coming of age story for our inner child
Reviewed: 04-24-24
You ever heard poetry that just spoke to your innermost senses, reminded you of your youth and tickled your imagination. Poet X does that so intuitively with every chapter read so eloquently and in cadence with the New York City beat. As a poet, I am thoroughly impressed and enamored by the way author Elizabeth Acevédo delivers each line with such clarity and emotion. A great listen on a long train ride or even with your pre-teen kids to prompt conversations. This outstanding novel elevates the mind and awakens the child-like spirit in us all. I applaud you, Poet X!

Black Love Wins Again

We need more narratives that prove that when couples of color are determined to make things work, regardless of their challenges, that we too can have our own happy ending. This was encouraging, inspiring, and entertaining. Wishing these two much success in life.

Story
For decades we've been told that positive thinking is the key to a happy, rich life. "F*ck positivity," Mark Manson says. "Let's be honest, shit is f*cked, and we have to live with it." In his wildly popular Internet blog, Manson doesn't sugarcoat or equivocate. He tells it like it is - a dose of raw, refreshing, honest truth that is sorely lacking today. The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck is his antidote to the coddling, let's-all-feel-good mind-set that has infected modern society and spoiled a generation, rewarding them with gold medals just for showing up.
