Best in series
Reviewed: 03-06-23
I feel like this book is the best in the series thus far. I seriously thought that I might not listen to this book as the last book in the series was terrible, in my opinion. I only listened to it because it appears that it was in the Plus catalog and didn't cost me a credit. I'm glad that I did.
One thing, though. I read another review where someone gave this a really low rating because it contained a rape. That reviewer is entitled to their opinion, but let me just say:
1. The rape was in the past
2. It was not explained in great detail.
3. She was not raped by the main hero of the story.
4. The fact that someone had been raped in the past in a work of fiction does not affect me the same way as it would if they were perhaps raped in the process of the current story, if that makes any sense...
5. Rape happens in the real world and therefore isn't completely out of place in stories. I think the fact that it was explained that she had been through something so horrible only makes her journey of learning to trust again so much better. I love a happy ending, especially for someone who has been through something horrible.
6. The rapist didn't come out unscathed.
So, knowing that, make your own decisions as to whether you read or listen to this story. I'm certainly glad that I did.

The narrator just sounds bored through most of this to me. Also, I had to look back at the description of this story to see what Kade's last name was because the way Palka says "Stewart" makes it sound like "Shirt".
The stories in this series have been really good. I felt like this one ended abruptly, though.

This book was so very good. Harriet Fraser is a great narrator, especially with the Scottish accent. I read the other book by this author about Cal and Phe because I didn't realize they were related books. I wish Audible would note that for others in the future.

A Struggle
Reviewed: 09-15-22
I really did not like that this book was narrated by two different people. I would much rather it had been read entirely by John Lane only, as he was very good. Olivia Thompson's voice for Sin was TERRIBLE. I almost stopped listening multiple times. Her voice is pleasant enough, but her different characters just weren't that good. The only ones of hers that I liked were the leading lady and her brother and sister-in-law. Period.
The story was good enough that I will listen to the next book (Lady Wallflower), but but only because there are different narrators and because it's free in my Plus catalog right now. Hopefully it is better. Based on this book (Lady Ruthless), I probably would not have finished it and would have requested a refund after the first time Oliva Thompson spoke on it.

This series is the first I've listened to by this author. I plan to listen to many more, especially if Carolyn Morris narrarate them.
The first book was funny. The second was slightly less funny, but a really cute story. This book was not funny. It was much more serious, but was absolutely beautiful and inspiring. Loved this story and how everything turned out.

OK

The story was ok and had some fairly humorous moments in it. It was different in most other books with the female character's back story.
The main complaint I had about it was the male character's voice by the narrator. He sounded like the flamboyant peacock types who are subcharacters in most of the other regency type books I've listened to. His voice was too lilty or song like or something, even during the love scenes. I just couldn't get into him.
if you liked the first book in this series, I'd still recommend listening to this one, though..

Story
Though Honora Tannach came of age amid the misty moors of the Scottish highlands, where warring clans battled to the death for the future of their wild land, nothing frightens her so much as a lifetime trapped in the castle of her cruel stepfather. She is thrilled when a marriage is arranged to the son of a Scottish laird...until her betrothed is revealed to be Cavan Sinclare. Though the savage warrior once saved her life, Honora knows no one can tame the heart of such a brute, no matter now finely chiseled his features or how enticing his eyes...

Painful... Very painful..
Reviewed: 07-28-22
This was a struggle for me to finish. The story CONCEPT was ok, but the writing seemed very simplistic or something? It was choppy, uninspiring, and just didn't flow right. Hard for me to explain...
The narrarator... I've listened to other stories narrarated by Antony Ferguson that weren't so bad, but this one was HORRIBLE. There was one other story from a while back (can't remember the title name) that was just as bad for the same reasons... I swore I'd never listen to another by him. I believe I have, though, when I had no other choice... I always listen to the sample first for anything by him and if the sample doesn't actually include any dialog so I can see if it's any good, I won't listen to it!
When he's just reading the story, he sounds fine. When he goes into character for the dialog, though, he literally sounds like grade school children do when they try to read something... Where they don't know which words or syllables to put emphasis on so they do it on the wrong parts or not at all. The dialog kept making me picture a couple of 10 year olds reading this story out... and then that just grossed me out.
So maybe it's the author's writing that makes Antony Ferguson sound worse? Maybe it's that this was an earlier work of his? Surely he's been doing this since before 2020?
Would love to know what happened to the youngest brother, but I just can't listen to another story by either of these folks.

Reviewed: 06-29-22
I have really liked every book in this series, but changing the narrator to Justine Eyre on the last book just ruined it all for me. Her male voices always sound like they're in pain somehow. Rosalyn Landor's voices were at times uplifting and humorous at times. Juntine Eyre's always sound so menacing. It gave the characters different personalities and just ruined this book for me.
