Its a bit confusing here. how is it that everyone at the school seems to know the endowed exist, while people outside the school "wont believe x happened."
Imagine if Harry potter was set mixed in a normal private school, voldemort was the principal and malfoy was his son. However muggles still have no idea magic exists but also they dont act all that surprised. Theres so much that you have to ignore for things to make sense here, and not much makes up for it.
Theres the mystery of his father, which if you have payed attention at all, you solved in halfway through this book. Spoiler alert, nothing happens with it in this book. Its so hamfistedly forshadowed.

Kirby Heybourne is great, odd but charming series

the series is wonderfully odd. It constantly seems like Rin is just a conman with a couple screws loose, but there's just enough doubt around every corner, and the fact this is Obert Skye writing, that makes it believable enough to wonder. it's not perfect, lots of convenience in terms of progressing plot, but that's kind of part of the story itself.

Also, I don't get the complaints about the yelling. I've never had to adjust my volume for this reader and this is the second or third series I've listened to with him. His narration is almost synonymous with YA novels for me.

Great 5th book. Terrible choice to change narrator

This book follows the rest of the series in quality, and I've enjoyed every single one. The narrator however, sounds like he's phoning it in. I've heard elementary school librarians read books better than this. The previous narrator had incredibly distinct voices that perfectly matched every character involved without question, but this replacement both butchers the voices and sounds entirely bored and flat. It's much harder to tell them apart, and half the time I forget who is the pov of the chapter in question. I don't understand why they ruined the last book by choosing a terrible narrator.

This series is full of YA tropes. The writing isn't exactly Tolkien level of thought out, and the characters in the first book come off flat and the story looks like a knockoff Inkheart.

Read this series. It starts off feeling generic, and full of tropes, but as you continue you will see why. this series is not just a YA series. This series is a love letter to books. The first and Fifth book follow a traditional YA style, but the journey takes you through other genres, pokes at their flaws, their strengths, and how they are written by both good and bad writers. Reading this series gives the reader a sense of the passion the writer has for stories. They tend to be predictable, but the series is aware of that, and uses it as part of the plot.

The Narrator is great. I see people complaining that he yells, but his acting is amazing. Different voices are distinct enough to notice who is talking when a character hasn't been named yet, and it only seems to get better as the series goes on.

All in all, give this book series a chance as a whole. The flaws seem like bad writing at first, until you dive deeper to see how clever and innovative the series is with overused tropes.

I follow the authors youtube channel, and he has my respect for his dedication to good writing in fantasy. this is the single best fantasy novel I have read, and has some very competent worldbuilding. even the mechanics of how the technology works is consistent and thorough. must read.

I read this series in highschool, never got past the second. I wanted to get back into it and finish and wow, this is kind of bad. the two main characters are supposed to have lots of knowledge about myths and legends because their parents, but only rarely show that. one of the side characters has an outfit described every 5 chapters and overall has way more description than anyone else because I guess the author really liked them. Josh is the most dense person I have ever met, is explained to that a certain spoiler moment will cause a certain spoiler result, then during them carrying out said moment is told there will be a much less worse result than what was described before and it turns into a forced "i cant trust the Gandalf character" trope. everything feels forced. maybe kids would miss that but kids aren't stupid, you don't have to spell every single thing out to them. worst even, sometimes he describes something as (from a characters point of view) "something I recognize" when we have no context to what that means. its not even something meant to be mysterious it was just the description of a hand gesture.
