Great sci-fi quest
Reviewed: 12-27-24
This was one of the best sci-fi books I’ve read. I especially enjoyed the “quest” aspect of the book which kept me on the edge of my seat. The character development was nice and the sci-fi elements were strong. I also noticed that all of the descriptions were extremely vivid which strengthened the story. Highly recommend this book!

Good Sci-fi, not so good character development and plot
Reviewed: 11-28-24
Overall, this is a decent sci-fi read. If you enjoy sci-fi, you’ll enjoy the many references throughout the story to other sci-fi work. The premise of the book is unique, but I felt like the plot was too scattered and there was no clear antagonist. It felt like a mish mash of a bunch of things sci-fi fans love to see but with no clear direction. I felt like it just touched on a bunch of things like AI humans, first contact, space travel, Star Trek style battles, exploration of new planets, exploring the unknown. But by only touching on each of these lightly, I felt like the story was lacking. Overall, good if you love sci-fi, not so good if you want to get attached to characters and what will happen next.

Better than book 1
Reviewed: 08-22-24
The plot and character development was better in this book than in Light of the Jedi. Also, the cognitive load of learning everyone’s names was lighter since some characters carried over from the first book. Overall, I enjoyed the book, but I wouldn’t put it on my top Star Wars books list. The antagonist is very intriguing and I want to know more, so I’ll read the next book.

Great sci fi novel

The Martian was a great science fiction novel with lots of hard sci-fi elements. Lots of calculations and nods to space travel science. There are also several moments throughout that are funny too. Would recommend to anyone looking for a good sci fi read. I will say though, I enjoyed Project Hail Mary more than The Martian. I think Andy Weir has gotten better over time.

It’s not just that it’s grueling and maliciously brutal, or even that it’s designed to stretch the riders’ capacity for pain beyond endurance. Decent novel, but left me wanting more
Reviewed: 04-17-24
Overall this book was decent, but was extremely slow in the beginning and left me feeling very unfulfilled at the end. I recognize that this is the first book introducing the High Republic era, but there were too many non-essential characters introduced and it made it near impossible to keep track of everybody especially early on. Later on, you realize that most of the characters aren’t actually that important. I gained more interest in the villain(s) as the book progressed but there is still a lot of mystery there that was left hanging. Definitely not the best Star Wars novel, but it wasn’t terrible.

Story
In August of 1914, the British ship Endurance set sail for the South Atlantic. In October 1915, still half a continent away from its intended base, the ship was trapped, then crushed in the ice. For five months, Sir Ernest Shackleton and his men, drifting on ice packs, were castaways in one of the most savage regions of the world. Lansing describes how the men survived a 1,000-mile voyage in an open boat across the stormiest ocean on the globe and an overland trek through forbidding glaciers and mountains.

While the premise of the book and adventure was interesting, the book was SO BORING and repetitive. Their ship was stuck in the ice for over 2 hours of listening. It was the same thing over and over and over again. This book definitely did not hold my interest.
