Story
After accidentally becoming Lord of Gloomwood Manor, countless enemies seek to kill Drake and take his title. All he wanted was some beer and a pack of donuts. Instead, Drake got abducted, tossed into a fantasy world, and almost ritually executed by a pro-wrestler monk with performance issues. After stabbing his rather idiotic kidnapper to death, he magically inherits the old fart’s massive mansion, servants, mountains of gold, and deadly magic powers... which would be great if it also didn’t paint a giant target on his back.

OH MY GOSH THIS IS A KEEPER!! I can't say this concept didn't cross my own mind for a story growing up, but, as I said, you have to figure out a way to make it WORK!! and IM SO EXCITED THAT THIS WORKS!! with his completely sarcastic and back biting nature, a world like this is a treasure trove of possibly!!!

the only thing that would crash this series would be making it political in any way. if the author made any "liberal" or "conservative" comment or if in the future they make any sjw garbage slant in their story.....it would had suffered and will suffer.
it's empty of politics.
it's simple and fun story telling and I loved it.

Story
Greg and Julian need to make a choice—die in the tornado that’s sucked them up in their van, or agree to hunt monsters in a world full of magic and levels and, oh yeah…monsters. The two frat bros may be master ghost hunters to their podcast listeners, but they never expected their antics to be taken seriously by a goddess in another dimension. And since when are ghosts the same as monsters? Awkward. But when the other option is certain death, it seems like it’s worth giving it the old college try.

it's a bad habit of mine...
now I don't have a book 2 for this series or a the next book for the other five series I'm in the middle of...
I love best friends/ band of brothers kind of books like this.
and the narrator is one of my favorites. (which is really high praise coming from a picky pansy like me).
the character dynamics are wonderful.
the plot is fresh.
and the dropped hints are... interesting....to say that it's obvious that they're plot hints, but BECAUSE it's obvious, I wanna doubt them and then the ACTIONS of minor characters gets you thinking in a whole other direction....
could be just me though....
i need book 2 stat...
like yesterday...

Reviewed: 11-16-23
had no idea there was a book and was ecstatic when I saw this!!
the show was "eh, not bad" but now after reading the books I'm mortified.
it's like they just took the idea from the title and did their own thing. not even CLOSE!!!
THE BOOK IS SO MUCH BETTER!! WHY CAN'T THEY JUST DO IT RIGHT?!
I need a book 3.
show is way too woke to work and shot itself in the foot.
this book is balanced well.
nicely done~

HONEST OVERALL REVIEW for THE WHOLE SERIES
Reviewed: 05-14-23
don't you hate it when you start a series and by book 4 it sucks?
this review is for the whole thing. I'm gonna be honest with you.
the characters are well developed and relatable. I'm from a military household and I was CRYING I was laughing so hard at their banter, and crying at the tender brother in arms parts and by golly, I love a bro story.
this is a bro story staked with strong female characters....but all in all it's a bro in arms story and I am all in for it.
now for what I really wanna tell y'all.
even if you have to DRAW it out in your own little diagram, you HAVE to keep track of the side characters.
I kid you not.
I always have a good head for side characters and who is who anyway and even I got a little crosseyed by book 5.
but it is SO worth it.
you will have your favorite and your favs favorites and you will cry when stuff happens to them and it really is a rollercoaster of emotional ...I actually have no idea what trip I've been on, but it was a trip.
but you HAVE to pay attention to who is who. and it's SO worth it!!

I mean...chatfield doesn't just throw around names and have them mean nothing. no...if you don't keep track of the names, you're lost by book 5 and you're not reading this review....

ok, first of all
to address ALL the concerns you have read about "character growth" in the other reviews. I read them and its what stopped me from reading this book for so long.
TWO THINGS
1) there is MORE TO LIFE than MAJOR change. Not everything has to slap you in the face ALL the time.
2) as for the - unsavory - individuals that are trying to make this political...i can bet they haven't looked themselves in the mirror and taken responsibility for ANYTHING their entire life, so reading a story about a boy who KNOWs how to apologize and FORGIVE others...it must REALLY rub them the wrong way.
I finally broke and started to listen to this book because i was desperate waiting for some other books to come out...
but unlike all the "stagnant" character development i was expecting, what i got instead was a subtitle mind game. Now, I can see how some could see that the guy didn't change that much, to give the fair critics their due, but, isn't that....normal? we as people don't usually change on a dime and its only book one. He's going to still have the same basic personality because as we get older its harder to change that, but what's CHANGING....is his PERSPECTIVE on LIFE....yes? We can ALWAYS learn MORE!!
dang it now i'm getting excited all over again and i need book 2!!!

Not your average litrpg.
not the common sassy MC.
not the common OP MC. (it actually makes sense.)
the danger is ACCTUALLY dangerous and he actually almost dies.
the girl actually acts like a girl and the guy acts like a guy. that exchange where she hits him and he leaves her behind WAS SO REFRESHING IT WAS AWESOME!! it was the best part. it was so small compared to the whole book but it was so SOLID in their personalities. HE wasn't going to die. SHE wasn't going to be disrespected. but HE wasn't going to DIE. and ohhhhh...i loooove ittttt.....the deeper issues of the mind and how when you live that long you become numb and a different person and....ahhhh...its such a good story.
