I really enjoy this author’s work, but this is by far my favorite of all of her books. The characters are so well written. As she writes, “words are hard.” And, nothing I can write will do this book justice.

Story
There are more than just paintings on display at the St. Albinus art festival as Mack shows up one morning to find a body propped up against one of the easels. And worse, a threatening message on the body indicates this might not be the killer's last victim. Deciding that solving this crime is her key to making a name for herself in town—for a good reason, for once—Mack immediately decides she’s going to figure out who killed the artist. But, she very quickly discovers that the victim had a lot more than watercolors on his palette.

The story is great as always, but there is at least one chapter from a previous book mixed in with this — and at a crucial point in the story no less. Unbelievably careless.

Humor, Action, & Characters

I normally don’t listen to much sci fi. But, I got this based on how much I liked the author’s other books. Now, I’m hooked and listening to the fifth in the series.
The characters are engaging, especially the sarcastic protagonist. It’s just the right pace, and I find myself buying the next book in the series just before the last chapter in the one I’m currently listening to.
I’m happy that the author is prolific and had so many books out by the time I discovered her. My wallet is slightly less so.

The story is overshadowed by Adele’s incessant whining about her wedding. Jason is also an irritating jerk in this. The characters have lost their charm entirely.

I really enjoyed the first book in this series, but this one is less fun. It’s darker and more tense. I find myself skipping chapters, and I’m not sure that I’ll be able to make myself finish it. It’s too bad, as the first book had so much promise.

Toxic Chet
Reviewed: 12-28-22
I liked most of the characters, but it would be nice to have a love interest for the main character that wasn’t an incredibly toxic jerk.
I’m trying not to let the Chet character ruin what would otherwise be a great series, but he is just despicable. The author tries to make excuses for him, but his behavior and attitude are truly inexcusable.

Narrator Change Ruined It
Reviewed: 09-21-22
I’m not sure why authors switch narrators midway through a series, and to make such a drastic change as this one ruined the series for me.
You can’t go from a high-energy narrator to one who is better suited for non-paranormal, dull-as-dishwater stories about the dangers of knitting.
Sometimes a boring cozy is needed to lull you to sleep, but I listened to this series because it was fun. It’s really not anymore.

I like a good epic fantasy, but it’s really difficult for me to find ones that are not Lifetime-movie dark. I’m so glad that I stumbled upon this one. It’s pretty much perfect if you’re looking for an adventure with excellent world building. You know that feeling Goonies gave you as a kid? That is the same feeling that this gives me as an adult.
