Story
For nearly four-hundred years, the Veil has protected us from the Fae of Alfheimr. In their absence, our lives have shifted from decadence and sin to survival and virtue under the guidance of the New Gods. I’ve spent my entire life tending to the gardens next to the boundary between our worlds, drawn to the shimmering magic like a moth to the flame. All of that changes the day the Veil shatters, unleashing the fae upon our world once again.

I really could NOT stand the incredible character flaws of the leads. Fmc is whiny and petulant, a complete and utter brat. Mmc is condescending and overbearing, and not in a good way. I almost didn’t want to move on to book two, it was that irritating.

Story
For weeks, he stood by my side, twisting his words into pretty half-truths. He enraptured me with his smooth temptation, leaving no corner of my being untouched. He consumed my mind and my body, then finally claimed my heart for himself. But Caelum’s true identity is terrifying enough to bring me to my knees. Then, I discovered the truth of who he is. Caldris is whispered in the Nothrek wind. The legend we only speak of with hushed words, in shuttered rooms, for fear of drawing his wrath once again.

A pretty good book, until the final fight scene

Both the fmc and mmc were a lot more bearable in the second book, and I was beginning to look forward to seeing where the arc was going in the subsequent books. And then… we just HAD to use the self sacrifice trope. It’s always done by the hero, so why change anything? Except… it was badly done, and the writing was just plain lazy. We have a character capable of calling a basilisk to her aid, of sending snakes to do her bidding, but when it comes to finding a solution to saving her mother, she will genuinely offer herself up. No plan, no ideas in the works. No consideration to the fact that her mother will just be killed afterwards anyway, since Byron can’t be trusted. Or the fact that her mate will literally off himself when she’s gone. Just “take me instead”. It was just bad, bad, bad. I get the attempt to bring everything full circle, but it just doesn’t work.

Not really a dark romance by any stretch, but still fairly enjoyable

Not gonna lie, I thought a different author wrote this book, since there were soo many similarities between the world Zara created and that of Ava Richardson. This seemed like an attempt at introducing some steamier scenes into her books, rather than an entirely knew author. I did find it annoying that the fmc complains about how the far try to cheat the humans out of their deal, and yet all she does is try to find a way out of HER deal. You made the call to call for aid, you chose what to offer, you deal with the consequences like an adult. A decent book, but left me scratching my head with comparisons.

Story
As a professional thief, Esme Bellerose's daylong job interview was going well: She'd come through most of it with only a black eye, bloody lip, broken wrist, a few cracked ribs, and talon marks from a ruby-throated dragon - but at least she wasn't missing any pieces. And if she could only survive until the five o'clock hour, she'd land the job that was every mystic thief's dream: employment at SPL Inc. But the head of SPL, Elric Ostergaard, has other plans, and he's put one additional task on Esme's job application, which must be completed before he'll hire her.

And interesting new take on magic, but with a few head scratchers. The “unbound” were generally to be non-magic humans, but could technically also be cursed magical humans? That was confusing and a little unclear. There were a “typos” too, based on how the story was read, but nothing that’s a deal breaker. I loved how Ember was involved in the story, her role as the phoenix was a great addition.

Olivia is such an irritating character that I actually couldn’t make it past chapter 6. Demanding Jericho attend her at all hours of the day, being irritated when he is too slow to arrive, when it’s 3:00am and he was attempting (and failing) to get some rest before her bullshit starts again. I get it, you’ve been through some trauma and your sisters life is in the balance. But being a twat to the one person who is going above and beyond to rectify what’s been done is not ok, and is just gross behavior. Jericho didn’t need someone like her, regardless of the arc she was destined to go on, and I wasn’t sticking around for that entitled nonsense.

Eden appeared to regress greatly in age in this book. She was already known to stomp her feet like a petulant child in the previous books, but the gross number of times this childish tantrum occurred in the book made me wish I had kept count. Her lack is self-awareness, coupled with her “pity me” attitude filled me with such disdain. Kinda glad the king is dead finally, so we can stop being reminded of “the war that’s going on” whenever Eden gets her panties in a twist.

Ok, first book in the series got a pass under the assumption that it was from a brand new writer and a narrator who truly didn’t do anything to help the book. I very nearly didn’t make it through the second, and have no intentions of listening to the rest of the series at this point. The voice of snowball (still no idea why a black cat is named that…) is beyond obnoxious, the mc is, imo, an idiot, and with the writer’s inability to find alternatives to “he says/she says/I say”, I can’t do it. He exclaimed, she whined, I growled… just a few options that would have made the writing more bearable, but fail to make an appearance.

I really struggled with this one. There was a ton of repetitive words and phrases that should have been caught by the book’s editor (assuming one was used), and the narrator seemed too bland to make up for the writing. The story progressed absurdly quick, having a rushed feeling in the very beginning and leaving the listener feeling like they were in for a short story rather than a full book. Hoping to see growth from the author and narrator in book 2.

This series had an intriguing plot that held my attention. The characters were well written, with ok exception: Ona. I waited 3 books to see if she wasn’t truly as shallow and vapid as she appeared. 3 books for there to be a big reveal when she explains how her self-centered behavior wasn’t actually what it appeared, that she knew Lady Lazard was a losing, manipulative waste of air. But nope. Ona didn’t want to believe her Myla, because it meant that she could t continue to live in comfort. Surrounded by all the pretty things she clearly deserved, Ona refused to believe the facts right in front of her face, choosing to believe awful lies about a group of people who she lived with, who she knew well and even risked her life to save. There wasn’t some deeper “I’m working to keep mom and dad alive, but I knew this was all lies” moment, it was a “gosh, you’ve been lying to us all along?! But why? How did I fall for it?” Ona was a twat, who didn’t deserve her sister’s love and friendship.

Not gonna lie, this was nearly a dnf for me from the very beginning. While I loved the show and found the story intriguing, the monotonous droning of the narrator was so off putting, I thought for sure it was an ai rendering. There was no inflection, no emotion. No change in tone whatsoever. This reading was dry as the Sahara, and not an experience I would care to repeat.
