Story
San Francisco, 1947. Bartender Sammy “Two Toes” Tiffin and the rest of the Cookie’s Coffee Irregulars—a ragtag bunch of working mugs last seen in Noir—are on the hustle: they’re trying to open a driving school; shanghai an abusive Swedish stevedore; get Mable, the local madam, and her girls to a Christmas party at the State Hospital without alerting the overzealous head of the S.F.P.D. vice squad.

Caution - F word repeatedly, from the start
Reviewed: 12-13-24
For those put off by egregious use of the F word, just stay away. Lot's are dropped just in the first chapter.
But it's the narration that turned me off to the book. It's too much old timey private eye pronounciation that makes the book unlistenable for me. Typically I enjoy the narrator's performances, but definitely not this one. Despite restarting this book on several different occassions, trying to get into it. there was no redemption.

Story
Neanderthals have developed a radically different civilization on a parallel Earth. A Neanderthal physicist, Ponter Boddit, accidentally passes from his universe into a Canadian underground research facility. Fortunately, a team of human scientists, including expert paleo-anthropologist Mary Vaughan, promptly identifies and warmly receives Ponter. Solving the language problem and much else is a mini-computer, called a Companion, implanted in the brain of every Neanderthal. But it can't help his fellow scientist back in his world, Adikor Huld, when the authorities charge Adikor with his murder.

Trigger warning. A woman is horribly assaulted at the start of thiis book. I've listened into chapter 22, and the horrible event has zero to do with the storyline.
What's the point of this cruel start to the book!?

Story
For the last 10 years, psychologist Sam Gosling has been studying how people project (and protect) their inner selves. By exploring our private worlds (desks, bedrooms, even our clothes and our cars), he shows not only how we showcase our personalities in unexpected - and unplanned - ways, but also how we create personality in the first place, communicate it to others, and interpret the world around us.

The main character's brother finds out as well, but not one of these characters reports the kidnapping to the police. The main character is talked into releasing the woman, and does so, He states that she will leave her husband of her own choosing, and come to him, but if she doesn't, he'll kidnap her again - for her own good.
The main character contributes to the death of the son, and isn't all that much impacted by the young man's death,

Faced paced, well rounded, funny and poignant.

I watched SNL, and distinctly remember Molly Shannon's Catholic school girl antics. Initially I was a bit put off by how she frequently tucked her hands into her armpits, then held her fingertips to her nose, and inhaled deeply.
She made this character wildly physical, tossing herself at or through props without wearing padding. She doesn't talk about having injured herself on stage, but watching the physicality of her character, I guess that she must have.
I recommend this book. It's a nostalgic read for those who watched Molly Shannon during her time on SNL.
