It's February, 1852, and all around Chicago, Maggie sees postings soliciting "eligible women" to travel to the gold mines of Goosetown. A young seamstress with a small daughter, she has nothing to lose. She joins 43 other women and two pious reverends on the dangerous 2,000-mile journey west. None are prepared for the hardships they face on the trek or for the strengths they didn't know they possessed. Maggie discovers she’s not the only one looking to leave dark secrets behind.

Colman Harpe works for the C&O in the Appalachian rail town of Thurmond, West Virginia, but he'd rather be a preacher and lead his own congregation. When a member of the rival McLean clan guns down his cousin and the clan matriarch, Serepta McLean, taunts the Harpes by coming to a tent revival in their territory, Colman chooses peace over seeking revenge with the rest of his family. Colman, known for an unnaturally keen sense of hearing, is shocked when he hears God tell him to preach to the McLeans.

As a reader of historical fiction at first thought I would not like the way this was framed… Dates locations and names for each chapter. But I got so caught up in it intriguing story that I just couldn’t wait for the next segment. My heart broke for the challenges they faced. I’m sure there were many such stories during those days of war.

Not religious…spiritual warfare.
Reviewed: 10-20-22
I see some complaints about this series being “too religious”. I wondered what I would think as a Christian. I have read books that were too preachy and been distracted by it. But I have to say this series was very realistic to me. If I were facing what they faced I would claim Gods promises in scripture, I would pray about every decision. I would not be opposed to a gun battle in a Just war. To me this novel was in context very appropriate. Some scenes were too fierce for me, yet understandable in that circumstance. I did d like this and I’ve ordered another series.
