I recommend reading the pre-quel to this first. This was a very engaging story. I picked it up to read while waiting for her next Lady Sherlock book, and enjoyed this ALMOST as much as that series. Ms. Thomas is a very gifted writer. Yes, read this one.

I sometimes wish reviewers wouldn't say a book has a surprise ending, or a great twist, or they didn't see that coming. That is not exactly a spoiler, but for me that skewers it a little. So, I figured out who the killer was way before the end. BUT, not all of it! This author is new for me and I will definitely read more of her books. The BEST part of the book is the narrator. I'm getting ready to look for more books narrated by her. I listen to about 4-5 books a week. I don't have patience for TV, and I listen while I'm doing everything except working (sometimes then...) and I usually like all narrators, even the mediocre ones because how can you not like someone that reads to you? But this narrator blew my mind with her inflection, timing, and spot on performance. Yes! I highly recommend this book.

I rarely ever give a narrator a bad review. I usually love anyone willing to read to me. But this felt like the torture I felt in 3rd grade when the teacher made the class bully read aloud...
I had high expectations for this book because Spinning Silver was so absolutely wonderful. I finished because I thought it may get better. I love magic, but maybe this was to fantasy even for me.

I don't review as often as I should...

I don't review books as often as I should since I depend on other's reviews to determine if I want to listen to a book. This one caught me by total surprise. I have NEVER said this before: This book made me think of my all time favorite author Ruth Rendell/Barbara Vine! Ms. Jewell's ability to portray the subtle and overt manifestations of neediness, lonliness, psychologically impaired, and down right normal people was absolutely amazing. I found myself standing in my bathroom after I prepared for bed just listening because I could not go to sleep until I found out what was next.
Highly recommend this book.

I read "Then She Was Gone" and "I Found You" and was totally ecstatic thinking I'd finally found a new author I was anxious to follow. And because those two were so very good, I will try another of Ms. Jewell's books. But I cannot recommend this book. It was so very different from the other two. No real mystery, the characters were not interesting enough to peak my interest. I kept listening thinking the excitement and depth of "I Found You" was going to start any minute. I gave up about 3/4ths in.

If you like Lifetime movies

If you like Lifetime Movies, you will like this book. Please don't think I'm knocking Lifetime movies. I watched them frequently when I was in my 20's.
For me this book just did not have enough depth and the characters were somewhat one dimensional. I found it predictable and a little "preachy". However, I also have to admit to reading Kate Morton's latest just before this one and was probably looking for something as in-depth and intense.

I cannot recommend this book to fans of Elizabeth George, Kate Morton, Lucinda Riley, Tana French, or Ruth Rendell.

This book probably would have been good to me when I was 12 y.o. I gave the narrator the benefit of doubt, the characters had strange, unexplained accents. Pass on this one. Wish I could get my money back...

When Robert McCammon started the Matthew Corbett series each book could be read as a stand alone book. It was more interesting if you knew the characters, but not necessary. Now Mr. McCammon has joined leagues with those authors that feel it is ok to try to force his fans to read the next book by NOT ENDING THE STORY.

This practice strikes me as somewhat underhanded. A good author can conclude the current predicament and if needed still leave the "bad guy" alive to go on and wreak havoc another day, in a new book. Therefore I gave it 2 stars. The action is as intense as in the previous books, and the characters well written. Unlike the first 3 books, Mr. McCammon's background as a horror author is evident in these last two books. The torture scenes, fight scenes, etc are nightmare producing.

I went back and read all of the books again when this one came out just so I could REALLY enjoy the experience. Now I feel like I wasted my time because there is still no conclusion.

Disappointed.

I a, a new fan to the Anna K series. This was a fantastic book. I love seeing what other authors do with Mr. Holmes, and must admit I hadn't been much impressed with any other author but Laurie R. King. But this series is gritty. It grabs your attention from the beginning and holds on.
My only complaint is the narrator. Initially I'd bought the Kindle edition and listened to the auto reader set with a British accent. When I heard the audible edition I was so disappointed, I actually went back to listening to the auto reader whenever I could. The narrator has a high, squeaky voice, so Anna's voice is heavily German accented in a squeaky voice. The male voices were worse. I love narrators because they bring my books alive and rarely give negative reviews, but this time I had to say something.
I highly recommend the book in kindle edition.

I'm so happy I didn't decide to look up any previous books by this author before stsrting this book. As I was reading this book, it was so good I decided to see what other books she had written and surprised to discover just a year ago I'd struggled through The Husbands Secret. That book was so horrible I can't even remember what the secret was!
This book was so wonderful. I especially loved the way the author chose to let the story develop. I found myself alternately sitting on tender hooks, crying, laughing, and even at times staring at my Bose speaker as if to say, " You did not just say that"!
I hate spoiler alerts when reviewers say something like, "I was not expecting that twist" or "the subject matter was handled so well". THOSE ARE a spoilers people! So, I'm not going to say anything except, read this book!
