Story
On a warm spring evening, guests gather in a perfectly manicured garden to celebrate Maggie and Len’s twenty-fifth wedding anniversary. Maggie leans against the apple tree, watching her fun-loving husband and darling children as her heart swells with pride. As the joyful party atmosphere disappears into the night, close by, the lifeless body of a young woman is pulled from a river. Slipping upstairs to find the special gift for her adoring husband, Maggie stumbles across something else hidden amongst the dusty boxes of family keepsakes.

Entertaining and Great Narration
Reviewed: 02-01-25
The twist was obvious early on, making the 11-hour story feel much too long. This book could have been more impactful if trimmed to 7-8 hours. That said, I kept listening at an increased speed because the plot still held my curiosity—I wanted to see if my predictions were right. I didn’t anticipate the sweet twist in the final moments, which made the wait worthwhile.
The narrator was excellent—at times downright hysterical—and added to the experience. Overall, it’s one of the more entertaining free audiobooks I’ve heard recently. I’m new to Anna-Lou Weatherley’s work, but I enjoyed this one enough to download another!

Story
Who is Audrey Hoedemaker? It's a question her sister Maureen has heard more times than she can count, and she doesn't know what the short answer would be. Little sister, troubled teen, backpacker, musical theatre coach, con artist, childcare worker. Murderer. A tragic, traumatic childhood casts a long shadow on the Hoedemaker sisters. Maureen has worked hard to move beyond the violence of the past and build a good, honest life for herself. Audrey, however, just can't seem to do the same, careening from one state of chaos to another.

Way too Predictable!
Reviewed: 12-21-24
If you figure it out in the first few chapters the rest of the book is filled with boring, back-story filler. I kept skipping whole chapters just to get to the end and confirm the outcome. The plot is very shallow and thinly veiled. Good thing it was free.

I judge a great book by how eager I am to dive back into it, and this one definitely hit the mark! The story is fresh, skillfully crafted, and perfectly paced, with no unnecessary filler or endless subplots that need a scorecard to follow. In addition no political nor woke agendas, or gratuitous sexual raunch- just fulfilling and engaging story selling. Enjoy the banquet!

Poorly developed characters thinly placed within the oldest plot of time. Throwing in the gay agenda only worsened the attempt to make this amateur story relevant. Good thing it was free and only 2 hrs.

This felt like being stuck in a windowless jury room for months and months of endless prattle going nowhere. After 7 hours, I couldn't take it anymore and just googled the results of this case. Wanted to love it, but after hearing rehash upon warmed over rehash of Alvin's idiosyncrasies (OK, we get it already!!!) there was just not enough tension to support the endless dribble of his repetitive weirdness.

Sneaky and Unexpected Ending

I usually guess the outcomes about half way into a story but this one completely took me by surprise! Linear story line, easy to follow with no unnecessary convoluted rabbit trails of “filler” details and characters. Just good, clean writing and a twist that will leave you gasping and rewinding to make sure you heard it correctly!

Brilliant! Most Will Miss the Subtle Twist!

Up until the last couple moments, I was ready to give it a 3 star review for the story. The narration is superb! But in the final few sentences, I was gobsmacked with the most subtle and brilliantly crafted ending I have ever read! I didn't see any other reviews that eluded to this secret treasure, so am thinking only the most discerning readers who enjoy twists and surprises will catch it.

If you're cool with explicit content, this book might be your jam. But for me? An hour in, and I had to tap out. No shade on anyone's reading choices, but just like you've got the right to pick this up, I've got the right to put it down—especially when I've paid for it with no refund option. Isn't it about time audiobooks got a rating system, just like movies and video games? Let's level the playing field.

This story has it all; rich and satisfying laughter, tragedy, suspense, twists, and redemption of a life well-lived. it would make an Academy Award-worthy movie!!
