Story
When Pope Pius XII died in 1958, his papers were sealed in the Vatican Secret Archives, leaving unanswered questions about what he knew and did during World War II. Those questions have only grown and festered, making Pius XII one of the most controversial popes in Church history, especially now as the Vatican prepares to canonize him.

Thoroughly researched and fascinating
Reviewed: 06-19-22
All of this writer's books are based solidly on the facts and have a strong narrative drive. in essence this is a story of how Pious XII and the Vatican did everything possible to avoid taking any stand on the Nazis and Italian fascists. Any attempt to whitewash the sorry history of the Pope's collusion and damning silence in the face of Nazi atrocity is thoroughly debunked.

A blessing to humanity
Reviewed: 05-02-22
As a Buddhist and a Christian myself, it is indeed wonderful to hear from this great spiritual leader who integrates these two great religions from the heart and intuitively understands how they parallel and complement eachother. He is also courageous enough to point out how the human tendency to cling to concepts about God rigidly and supplant actual spiritual practice with indoctrinated beliefs that exclude any understanding of spirituality outside of concepts learned through one's own religion ultimately leads to conflict and violence--not love. He clearly has a personal relationship to Jesus, and keeps a picture of Jesus, as well as the Buddha, on his alter. He is, truly, a blessing to humanity.

Story
Ordered to hold an abandoned army post, John Dunbar found himself alone, beyond the edge of civilization. Thievery and survival soon forced him into the Indian camp, where he began a dangerous adventure that changed his life forever. Set in 1863, the novel follows Lieutenant John Dunbar on a magical journey from the ravages of the Civil War to the far reaches of the imperiled American frontier, a frontier he naively wants to see "before it is gone".

A beautiful fable. It never happened but it should have. A requiem for an ancient way of life that is gone forever. Uplifting and tragic in equal measure.

Story
Arguably the most important American lawyer of the 20th century, Thurgood Marshall was on the verge of bringing the landmark suit Brown v. Board of Education before the US Supreme Court when he became embroiled in a case that threatened to change the course of the civil rights movement and to cost him his life. In 1949, Florida's orange industry was booming, and citrus barons got rich on the backs of cheap Jim Crow labor with the help of Sheriff Willis V. McCall, who ruled Lake County with murderous resolve....

The appalling injustices perpetrated against african-americans in the american south of the mid-twentieth century still have the power to shock and the courage it took for the NAACP to confront these injustices reminds us that every advancement came only with unending struggle.
