Story
One hundred thousand years ago, at least six human species inhabited the Earth. Today there is just one. Us. Homo sapiens. How did our species succeed in the battle for dominance? Why did our foraging ancestors come together to create cities and kingdoms? How did we come to believe in gods, nations, and human rights; to trust money, books, and laws; and to be enslaved by bureaucracy, timetables, and consumerism?

This is one of my favorite books of all time
Reviewed: 08-06-18
Thoroughly researched, fascinating, and accessible, this book is a non-stop ride through the latest archaeological research around human evolution and adaption. Make no mistake, the revelations within this book will blow your mind. How much did I love it, exactly? So much so that after listening to it, then reading it, I purchased it in Russian to read it in Russian (unrelated, I just really like Russian and wanted to know the correlative vocabulary). You will not be disappointed.

Story
Leo Tolstoy's classic story of doomed love is one of the most admired novels in world literature. Generations of readers have been enthralled by his magnificent heroine, the unhappily married Anna Karenina, and her tragic affair with dashing Count Vronsky.

Incredible story, less-than-stellar pronunciations
Reviewed: 07-24-17
First of all, this book is incredible. Tolstoy's ability to put to words the inner workings of the human mind and conscious reason, and to describe with incredible accuracy emotions that we have all felt but probably never described, is nothing short of masterful. A masterpiece of philosophy and introspection.
Maggie Gyllenhaal (sp?) did an "ok" job, but one would think that of all the money spent on getting her to read this monster of a story, some could have been set aside for basic Russian pronunciation lessons, particularly as they concern names. Her mispronunciation of the names was so regular and unwavering I rather suspect she was coached to do so incorrectly. Likewise for the brief moments of German. I'll admit her French wasn't atrocious, but certainly left room for improvement.
