Story
The story begins with an investigation into some strange reports of an "opera ghost", legendary for making the great Paris opera performers ill-at-ease when they sit alone in their dressing rooms. Some allege to have seen the ghost in evening clothes moving about in the shadows. Nothing is done, however, until the disappearance of Christine during her triumphant performance.

**warning, includes some spoiler**
the reward ng of this novel. left me with mixed feelings. the climax of the story as rail and the Persian are about to be drowned I. the Phantoms torture chamber, is about the point when the narrator's voice does NOT become droning, monontonus. after this point is when the action livens up and griping narration.
would advise read the text of the novel first, and then listen to this recording.

The First Congress was the most important in US history, says prizewinning author and historian Fergus Bordewich, because it established how our government would actually function. Had it failed - as many at the time feared it would - it's possible that the United States as we know it would not exist today.

narrator has a painful rising intonnation
Reviewed: 09-19-24
no dis respect to the narrator intended. discovered on first listen that on the last syllables of longer words, the voice can have a painful resonance on the ear at any volume setting. it's probably a technological problem, may be atmospheric. just wanted to give everyone interested a friendly warning to adjust their volumes accordingly.
that said the reading is masterful and I highly recommend this narrator, it's almost as if this recording was actually recorded synchronous with the events of the congressmen of the 18th century.
a must for any student of the early American Republic period.

Elwood Blues (aka Dan Aykroyd) is on another mission—to tell the full story of how two young actors went from blues lovers to Blues Brothers. In this fascinating audio documentary Aykroyd “gets the band back together”, taking listeners on a road trip through time—from late nights in the early days with John Belushi at Dan’s speakeasy in Toronto, to working with blues legends Aretha Franklin, James Brown, and Ray Charles on The Blues Brothers movie, through the founding of House of Blues, the Blues Brothers 2000 sequel, and beyond.

The Great Poets: Robert Browning

Story
Robert Browning’s popular poems "The Pied Piper of Hamelin" and "How They Brought the Good News" are often anthologised, but it is in his dramatic lyrics such as "My Last Duchess" and the chilling "Porphyria’s Lover" that his poetic genius shines. Browning, with his unusual use of language, can be a challenging poet, but one who is always rewarding. This selection shows the many imaginative facets of this often neglected Victorian poet.

if you grew up with either the mother goosed rhyme story, or the Sesame street News Flash skit, where Kermit the Frog interviews the rad, Bohemian pied Piper(whose pipe fails to influence the rats)... this poem by Browning is definitely not intended for children. that is to say, you can't blame Jim Henson for adapting the poem for preschoolers and small children.
and the burghers of Hamlin absolutely has it coming (although I can't condone mass kidnapping of children

How can we look afresh at Shakespeare as a writer of sonnets? What new light might they shed on his career, personality, and sexuality? Shakespeare wrote sonnets for at least 30 years, not only for himself, for professional reasons, and for those he loved, but also in his plays, as prologues, as epilogues, and as part of their poetic texture.

Story
A celebration of individuality, diversity, and nonconformity, On Liberty still makes a persuasive argument for what John Stuart Mill believed to be humankind’s essential liberties: the freedoms of speech, assembly, and the pursuit of pleasure, so long as one’s actions do not impede the liberty of another. These freedoms, he maintained, result in a far more successful society than one ruled by the tyranny of the majority. This treatise on personal liberty has inspired debate since its publication in 1859, and has provided the foundation for modern liberal political thought.

if you are like me, and were told of J.S. Mill (in conjunction with Jeremy Bentham) and the philosophical discipline of utilitarianism, but otherwise did not know if it intimately, then this particular recording is an excellent introduction to Mill's philosophy and on one of his two magnum opus.
also for newbies, recommend listening more than once to catch everything;
otherwise, just listening to this narrator and how Mill felt about civil, religious and personal liberties with respect to the State (and vice versa) of the early 19th century is peaceful and makes you reflect on the same of the late 20th century forward.
