I keep reading because I like this type of series. The narrator is one of my all time favorites. I’ll read whatever she narrates. If you like the Josie Quinn Series by Lisa Regan, you’ll like this one.

It was a lot

5 stars for the narrator. I read more reviews when I was half way through the book and still wondered when it was going to pick up speed. I kept going. It did start to reveal more and put some pieces together BUT man it was rapid fire and all over the place. There was more than one plot, which I didn’t understand why. There were things that were unrelated but just as intense…it was strange to think that everything was going to wrap up and then it it would take another turn.
I’m not sure if I’ll read another book from this author. She is over-descriptive…to the point where she’s telling us why there is clear glass in the ICU for nurses to see patients or telling us every cross street in Chicago that’s she’s crossing…& then stopping to let us know why the cars might not stop for a pedestrian if the drivers aren’t paying attention. I think the audio book would’ve been a couple of hours shorter if she thought her readers were smarter. It had several plot twists but it dragged on for me.

The story was cute and definitely Rom-Com-ish. I enjoyed the male narrator more than the female reader. Not to say she’s not a great narrator, but for this story her narration made the book almost sound like an episode of Scooby Doo.

Story
After Lucy is found wandering the streets, covered in her best friend Savvy’s blood, everyone thinks she is a murderer. Lucy and Savvy were the golden girls of their small Texas town: pretty, smart, and enviable. Lucy married a dream guy with a big ring and an even bigger new home. Savvy was the social butterfly loved by all, and if you believe the rumors, especially popular with the men in town. It’s been years since that horrible night, a night Lucy can’t remember anything about, and she has since moved to LA and started a new life.

I loved this book. I can’t count how many times I laugh out loud at her inner monologue. It was unapologetically real and said out loud what people’s darkest thoughts can be. I love that the author correctly called them “intrusive” though. Overall it’s my favorite so far for 2024.

Story
Photographer Isla Wilson is thrilled she's landed her dream job, but the clients who hired her are getting stranger by the day. It sounded so perfect—a month's assignment at the lush Scottish Highlands property of architect Alban McGregor, and his wife, Jessica. But in the woods, there's a playhouse with a chilling history. Two years ago, the McGregors' daughter Elodie was abducted and then died in that playhouse. The townspeople insist her abductor had to be a stranger in their town. Alban refuses to knock the playhouse down, even keeping a picture of it on his wall.

This book started out really good with its twists and turns and mysteries, but then it got pretty far fetched. I still wanted to know the end, but honestly there was a clear line between the first half of the book and the last half…almost like it was different authors…weird, but not a complete waste of time. The narrator was phenomenal.

This was the first Rachel Hawkins book I’ve read. What a great book. I wouldn’t call this book predictable only because I think it led you in lots of directions to finally stop at the right conclusion. I was completely invested in the characters and i happily finished the book in just 3 days. I can’t wait to read more from this author!

My husband and I are fighting for our lives in hospital after a terrible car accident. But despite my pain, all I can think about is what our families will find behind our front door. The scarf that has been all over the news, belonging to a dead young woman with honey-coloured hair. I have to speak to the police before my husband can. I’m drifting in and out of consciousness, but when I hear my wife talking to the police, accusing me of the murder of an innocent woman, a cold fear grips me. I know I’ve got a temper.

But Amanda’s life isn’t as picture perfect as it seems. For over a decade she’s been hiding a dark secret—a secret that goes back to that summer at Camp Catalpa when a man died in the woods. Fellow campers Catherine and Meg were there too, and in the years since, not one of them has ever spoken about what happened that day.

I only gave it a 2 because the narrator was great. Not sure if I’ll give this author another chance or not. I really don’t need every single thing described in such over the top detail…it was like the entire book was a ghost story. I get that the book needed to go back and forth to give us perspective, but I really didn’t need so much of the tween drama. I guess this book just wasn’t for me.

Painful, but I hung on

I wanted to like this book. Both narrators are hard to listen to for that long, especially with all the way too descriptive inner monologues and metaphors. I couldn’t care less about the ants on the ground and what they are thinking. It was pretty bad. Read at your own risk…you can’t get that time back (or the credit).
