The Davenports are one of the few Black families of immense wealth and status in a changing United States, their fortune made through the entrepreneurship of William Davenport, a formerly enslaved man who founded the Davenport Carriage Company years ago. Now it's 1910, and the Davenports live surrounded by servants, crystal chandeliers, and endless parties, finding their way and finding love—even where they’re not supposed to.

The author did a great job of tying pieces together at the end. I am Thankful for the historical piece at the end which is what the author of ‘The Secret Life of Bees’ did with her stories. It makes the work of fiction take on a new dimension. I highly recommend this reading for young adults struggling to make the transition from high school to college.

Story
In present-day California, Eleanor Bennett’s death leaves behind a puzzling inheritance for her two children, Byron and Benny: a black cake, made from a family recipe with a long history, and a voice recording. In her message, Eleanor shares a tumultuous story about a headstrong young swimmer who escapes her island home under suspicion of murder. The heartbreaking tale Eleanor unfolds, the secrets she still holds back, and the mystery of a long-lost child challenge everything the siblings thought they knew about their lineage and themselves.

The story reports on three generations from Jamaica to North America. It was a book club pick. I thoroughly enjoyed the history mentioned. All cultures have borrowed from other countries in most cases due to war. The banjo came from Africa for example.

This debut collection is a complicated love letter to Washington, DC, and to those who call it home: a TSA agent who's never flown, a girl braving new worlds to play piano, and a teacher caught up in a mayoral race. These characters navigate life's "training school" - with lessons on gentrification and respectability - and fight to create their own sense of space and self.

I enjoyed the book. There was new vocabulary to learn-you are never to old to learn. The story read as 2 separate stories to me: espionage and romance. They were both greatly detailed however I had a hard time blending them. I am looking forward to her next work. I also read and enjoyed’Stacey’s Extraordinary Words’ and ‘Lead From the Outside ‘ which I immensely enjoyed.
