Mostly enjoyable. A bit of backstory would have been welcome.

The narration was very good, but some of the writing was a bit clunky, oddly out of date, with a 50’s vibe.

DNF
This is an older Linda Howard title that demonstrates how much has changed, especially for female characters (and a lot of real life) in the last 30 years. The female lead is ridiculously helpless while still portrayed in such a way that she’s supposedly strong and competent. This portrayal isn’t helped by the narrator’s excessively little girl voice for her. I couldn’t finish it.

Story
What would make the perfect man? That's the deliciously racy topic that Jaine Bright and her three girlfriends are pondering one night at their favorite after-hours hot spot: Mr. Perfect. Would he be tall, dark, and handsome? Caring and warmhearted - or will just muscular do? As their conversation heats up, they concoct a tongue-in-cheek checklist that becomes an overnight sensation, spreading like wildfire at work and sizzling along email lines. But what began as a joke among friends turns deadly serious when one of the four women is murdered....

Good story, wrong narrator.
Reviewed: 09-14-24
As always, Linda Howard gave us an excellent story with fully fleshed characters. I would have enjoyed it much more, however, with a different narrator. The male characters had terrible voices, high pitched and nasally, which didn’t match their characters at all. Maybe go with Kindle or print on this one.

Story
Daisy Minor is bored. Worse than that, she's boring. A plain, small-town librarian, she's got a wardrobe as sexy as a dictionary and hasn't been on a date in years. She's never even had a lukewarm love affair, let alone a hot one. So when she wakes up on her 34th birthday and wonders how it is that she still lives with her widowed mom and spinster aunt while her friends have all gotten married and started families, she decides it's time to get a life - and a sex life.

I’ve always loved Howard’s writing, but it had been too long since I put this one in my shelf. It was so very good with a totally unexpected ending.
Great narration, too.

Jaclyn Wilde is a wedding planner who loves her job - usually. But helping Carrie Edwards with her Big Day has been an unrelenting nightmare. Carrie is a bridezilla of mythic nastiness, a diva whose tantrums are just about as crazy as her demands. But the unpleasant task at hand turns seriously criminal when Carrie is brutally murdered and everyone involved with the ceremony is accusing one another of doing the deed. The problem is, most everyone had his or her own reason for wanting the bride dead, including Jaclyn.

I’ve read most of Linda Howard’s books and enjoyed them all, but this is one of my favorites. Eric Wilder reminds me of all the men I love best. But every character in this book is an individual because Howard takes the time to make them so. From Eric’s police lieutenant supervisor who never mentions his wife without referring to her as his blushing bride to Jaclyn’s capable and viciously protective mom and the women who work with her, there isn’t a character who gets brushed aside.

I’m a longtime admirer of Singh’s writing, but this book didn’t hold my attention as the others have. Parts were great, but too many others struggled to hold my attention. Too much of it repeated information from prior books. That’s good for new readers, but less so for those of us who’ve loved this series from the very beginning.
