I don’t know what it is about this book but in my mind, it’s one of King‘s greatest. The writing is so tight, characters so real and the story so methodically chilling. The icing on the cake is the narration -absolutely riveting. Story telling at its finest

James was a vegetarian, wore only linen clothing, bathed daily at dawn in cold water, and was a life-long Nazirite. In this profound and provocative work of scholarly detection, eminent biblical scholar Robert Eisenman introduces a startling theory about the identity of James - the brother of Jesus - who was almost entirely marginalized in the New Testament.

A Tour De Force!
Reviewed: 11-17-24
This is a staggering book, rich in detail, research and scope. While the author states that it was written for both scholars and laity alike, the subject matter is extremely dense at times and (I believe) requires a reader with at least a working knowledge of both biblical, extra-biblical source material. Everyone will learn something over these 42 hours but I feel evangelicals will need to hang their hats at the door to really absorb some of its content.

Story
The year is AD 66, and the Roman province of Judea has exploded in rebellion. Far from being a revolution of unified peoples, the various Jewish factions of Sadducees, Zealots, Sicarii, and Edomites are in a state of civil war; as anxious to spill the blood of each other as they are to fight the Romans. The Judeans find hope when the Romans commit a serious tactical blunder and allow their forces to be ambushed and nearly destroyed in the mountain pass of Beth Horon.

Why Ruin A Great Book!
Reviewed: 01-30-24
This is an amazing book filled with fresh, fascinating subject matter unfortunately the distributor thought it was OK to allow the author read her own work. This is an issue I see over and over again and could be a result of an author who doesn’t listen to audiobooks them self or is unfamiliar with the amazing quality of today’s audiobooks. It takes an actor/ artist to deliver a good audiobook not just someone who can read. Let the researcher research, let the scholar study and please let audiobooks be read by professionally trained readers / actors!
I tried to listen to the author for a few chapters but had to stop. Her content is so good though I went out and bought a hard copy of the book.

I bought this because I read We Need To Talk About Kevin and the fact that they have ‘bad’ kids is the extent of comparison. This predictable mush mash of a story failed to connect me with any of the characters and I frankly found myself annoyed with them rather than sympathetic. The ending comes across like the author just lost interest.

One last hard ride home . . .
Reviewed: 10-04-16
I read many of the reviews and must say that initially i agreed with them. The book was just too hard, too unforgiving, and lacking in its former humor which helped take the edge off the unrelenting subject matter.
But now . . . I realize that i've ridden too far and too long in McMurtry's world and with his wonderful, enduring characters. Mr. McMurtry is the master of the trail and this is where the trail has ultimately taken us. I might wish things were different but alas, as in life, these are the cards we have been dealt. Life sux today as it did back then and unfortunately life's bows are never neatly tied.
With age often comes acceptance, regret, or a hardening of the heart and the humor of youth, that once so easily allowed us to float above sadness, now dries up like rain in the parched Texas desert.
This is a book of endings, and beginnings and life at it most raw. McMurtry could not have written a more realistic, beautiful and touching conclusion.

This book was an abomination to listen to; appalling narration, fantastically bad sound effects. But suddenly I realized: "Hey what am i thinking? Anyone dumb enough to shell out $3 for 5 minutes of ANYTHING deserves to be abused." Just the fact you're actually reading this review right now should alert you to the fact that you are dangerously close to walking down the same road of humiliation that i once traveled.

SonicMovie's contribution to audiobooks is akin to water-boarding's contribution to modern diplomacy. Forget about Britney Spears or Barney being played at deafening volumes for weeks upon end, listen to this little 'gem' once and you'll be begging to confess your darkestest secrets! Take the worst dubbed kung fu flick you've ever seen and imagine it vomiting out of your ipod headphones and turning your brain into quivering, stupified mush. Beside that the book was great!
