Story
When Augustine handed over the leadership of his church in AD 426, his successor was so overwhelmed by a sense of inadequacy that he declared, "The swan is silent", fearing the spiritual giant's voice would be lost in time. But for 1,600 years Augustine has not been silent - and neither have the men who faithfully trumpeted the cause of Christ after him. Their lives have inspired every generation of believers and should compel us to a greater passion for God.

Story
Librarian Sylvia Ashe knows nothing about her past, having grown up without a father and a mother who refused to discuss him. When she stumbles upon a diary that suggests she's descended from magicians, she's skeptical. After all, magicians are special, and she's just an ordinary woman who loves books. She seeks answers from a member of the most prominent family of magicians, but she quickly learns that finding the truth won't be easy, especially when he turns out to be as artless as her, and more compelling and dangerous than books.

Story
Wildflower is a portrait of Drew's life in stories as she looks back on the adventures, challenges, and incredible experiences of her earlier years. It includes tales of living on her own at 14 (and how laundry may have saved her life), getting stuck in a gas station overhang on a cross-country road trip, saying good-bye to her father in a way only he could have understood, and many more adventures and lessons that have led her to the successful, happy, and healthy place she is today.

I Love The Author, The Book Just Wasn't My Fav.
Reviewed: 05-12-22
Drew Berrymore is truly a free spirited flower 🌼 child. This book is such a testament to that. I love that authors can do such a great job narrating their own works, since they can carry the emotions so well. Her story is truly a rags to riches piece and rather than a continuous story this piece shares snippets of her journey. She details the people, places, and areas of growth along the way. I loved that.
My only struggles with the book are that she uses quite a bit of language to paint her emotions. It's not a problem for me to hear personally as an adult I can handle it, however, I am a stay at home toddler mom and I really had to be careful about what might be overheard by my kiddo. Plus I personally felt, while it got the point across sometimes, it was a bit distracting for me at other points. That leads me to the second issue... she shouts her emotions alot. I like that it gets the point across but it makes listening to it and maintaining volume control hard, esp. as I said if you are trying to protect little parrots from saying things at inappropriate times. Yes, I'm a cursing mom from time to time (trying to work on that myself:)) but I try limit/ control what the kiddo hears/ regurgitates in that area... not saying she shouldn't curse or shout. It's her story... let it out Drew! Just maybe read the book rather than listen if you don't want the f bomb screamed in your ear or throughout the house:)
I haven't written a book and I know it has to be crazy hard esp. an autobiography, so I dont want to take anything away from Mrs. Berrymore for this insainly monumentous task. I just personally struggled with this book for these reasons and it took away from the story a bit for me. What I gleaned from the story aside from those two things was beautiful and I hope it inspires many others.

Story
In this transcendent memoir, grounded in tribal myth and ancestry, music and poetry, Joy Harjo, one of our leading Native American voices, details her journey to becoming a poet. Born in Oklahoma, Harjo grew up learning to dodge an abusive stepfather by finding shelter in her imagination, a deep spiritual life, and connection with the natural world. She attended an Indian arts boarding school, where she nourished an appreciation for painting, music, and poetry; gave birth while still a teenager; and struggled on her own as a single mother, eventually finding her poetic voice.

This story was a beautifully told testimony. It was told from a poetic view, from a view of one transformed. Joy took her readers on a journey showing them the true struggles of her life as a native, a woman, and an artist. Her story shows how she overcame and is blossoming with each step into the person she was created to be.

Another Great One!
Reviewed: 03-18-22
I have loved every book written by Susan Messiner and this is no exception. I am always leary if there are trigger warning type scenes in a book. This author, however, doesn't put those rough parts in without purpose. They always have an instrumental part in the story that shows the true struggle of humanity and especially as it is related to the time period in which the story takes place.
This story has a unique twist in the telling of a story and a time where loss was overbearing. When there seemed to be little hope new life and hope are found and lives are forever changed and people are grown. This book truly is another great one!
