Give it a minute, it gets pretty good.

I was drawn to the author due to the Sapphic content, but do not be fooled, this isn’t a romance. The budding relationship between Breanna and the healer is not anywhere near central to the storyline.
I really struggled through the first half of the book. Very confused about Andra/Olwyn but by the looks of other reviews, I probably should have read the prequel first so I won’t let that affect my review. Oops 😬.
I listed to the first half twice, then moved on after getting myself situated—it’s not one where you can listen and do other things, you’ll need to pay attention or you’ll get way lost.
The narrator was very slow, had to crank up the speed a bit.
Wish there was just a tad more character/relationship development earlier on.

Excellent world-building and character depth. It will be one I read again. The narrator was slow, so I cranked it to 1.2x, but it didn’t detract from the story.
The primary relationship feels natural and perfectly sapphic.

I expected a 20+hr book to have a lot of filler but I was pleasantly surprised to be engaged the whole time. While I don’t think it was the authors intention, I really got a kick out of some dated terminology “ long distance minutes” “friends and family minutes” “text credit/minutes.” Gave me a good chuckle. This book made me laugh out loud several times in the characters banter. Well written, excellent character dynamics, and an overall positive representation of a same sex relationship where the family is ok with it. Too often do we hear stories of the opposite and it’s good to have the other side. 10/10 would recommend to another sappy sapphic like myself. 💕

Inaccurate representation of military
Reviewed: 10-10-20
While I’m sure if you haven’t been in the service, it probably didn’t detract at all, but enlisted personnel don’t have a command—that’s reserved for officers. Being a “sergeant” means she was enlisted. I found the military parts of it quite distracting—especially the guy who laid traps and had British explosives... that somehow were smuggled from a deployment back to the states as if we don’t get everything hand searched when we leave to prevent this type of thing and also when stuff like that goes a whole ass lockdown would happen to find it.
Other than that, it was an ok story.

I really enjoyed the back and forth chapters; story and then friends reactions. The whole story builds up very well, moving through the years in a way that doesn’t feel forced. The end felt a bit predictable, not in the happy ending kind of way, but knowing something bad would interject when the story is going a certain way. Didn’t really detract from the story tho! 10/10 would recommend.

I was much more enthralled with this book as I was with the first—not to knock it, I love both. Strong character development but I would have liked more world-building, maybe I missed it but with traveling characters I like to know the climate/surroundings (e.g. desert, plains, mountains etc). I nabbed the next book, I’m sold on the whole series already.
