"The horse screamed like a tortured woman."
Reviewed: 11-25-24
thats the best you could come up with? i heard that quote and stopped listening. why does your analogy have to involve a woman's suffering? it's just kind of gross. in a world full of things that can screen it has to be a woman suffering? this author his head too far up the posterior of the patriarchy. it felt gratuitous and set off my a-hole detection system, due to trivializing violence against women. no thanks5

Reviewed: 11-15-24
As of 11/14/24, Audible lists this as the first book in the series, but it is not. It is the third book, so don't read this one first, unless you like to live on the wild side. I've only listened to half so far and enjoyed it. It is a noir genre story and quite enjoyable. I lived in Monterey and really enjoy the sense of place the author evokes.

Story
In the distant past, a time of magic and swordplay, there lived Harold, the mightiest lich of all, a master of arcane sciences, and a challenger of gods. After reaching the pinnacle of his power and finding it surprisingly bland, Harold waged a cataclysmic war against the gods, aiming to shatter the very system that confined him.

fine story, polluted by poorly delivered puns
Reviewed: 08-21-24
the story is fine, even refreshing in it's twist on heroic characters. but the narrator over delivered on the puns. i like puns, but these felt forced and the delivery really took me out of the flow.
i liked it enough to maybe read the next one.

MC is an assassin? Really?!? this is a fantasy novel?!?
Reviewed: 08-06-24
the mc is referred to as an assassin, but she doesn't display any traits of a killer, she seems to care about people's lives. the MC is simply too nice to be someone who is willing to kill for money. people who kill casually seem like they would have serious scars, but she's just a happy-go-lucky lady, who is not burdened by a dozen or more murders. i just dont buy it. because it isnt written well enough to help me ignore the lack of characterization.
annnd, this is a romance, not a fantasy. thats not a diss, just a notice for people not prefering relationship heavy storirs. its rarely clear on Audible.
this is a story about a woman bouncing around between male partners. i tred to read the next one, but it just gets worse.

the author doesn't seem to be very smart they said the plants had barbs. and there were a number of other incorrect word usages. the prose is written simply and not very well. whole thing has a rather childish vibe, and I might have held on if it didn't seem like it could have been a YA novel.

Dolli had a very hands-off approach to ruling her once booming village. She preferred to use her alchemical skills to brew a nice cup of tea and keep whiny petitioners off her lawn with Wendigo repellant. But she pays the price for her apathy when her neglected village transforms into a Dungeon, making it fair game for any Hero with a lust for loot.

OP MC is boring

bored by this novel which just jumps from MC crushing everything. i lost interest when somehow a villian became a dungeon or something. when the MC is sufficient to crush everything the novel seems pointless.

Story
After the arrival of the multiversal monopoly BuyMort, life got brutal. All systems were through BuyMort. All currency was through BuyMort. All sales were through BuyMort. You could resist, you could compete, but it didn’t really matter because in the end you used BuyMort—or you perished. BuyMort be praised. But not everyone’s happy with the new system. Some, even, want to see it destroyed. It’s quick. It’s convenient. And it will help people kill you and your family as readily as it will help them sell you knickknacks for a quick mortie.

A C minus at best.
Reviewed: 03-15-24
i did not really like this story. it had lots of things that were annoying to me that broke my immersion. the fact that the author knows nothing of the location in which he set the story. prescot, az is high altitude and forested. its not a dry place with many cacti. why would you be so specific but also know nothing of the location? did he open a map and just say, "there!"
the theres the weird lovestory. the juvenile series ng her naked several times is boring and vaguely gross. and gods why do they do that weird thing whenever she says Buymort? its so distracting.
the selling random stuff that belongs to other people seemed like a convenient plot device rather than a well thought-out element of the world. its just seems like a C- effort. its okay and some people might like it, but not me.

the MC is the most powerful person that has ever been born with a limitless variety of the most powerful abilities from anyone he meets.. its just boring watching wonen throw themselves at the MC to get better equipment.. there should be a subgenre of litRPG called MC2OP.
