Intriguing dive into endurance sports
Reviewed: 06-15-22
this was a very interesting look into the ways humans endure in extreme sports, with both mind and body considered in the author's work, I found the studies referenced and the author's first hand experiences both entertaining and useful for my next ultra event!

Story
Every time we eat, we have the power to radically transform the world we live in. Our choices can help alleviate the most pressing issues we face today: the climate crisis, infectious and chronic diseases, human exploitation and, of course, non-human exploitation. Undeniably, these issues can be uncomfortable to learn about but the benefits of doing so cannot be overstated. It is quite literally a matter of life and death.

Story
The tipping point is that magic moment when an idea, trend, or social behavior crosses a threshold, tips, and spreads like wildfire. Just as a single sick person can start an epidemic of the flu, so too can a small but precisely targeted push cause a fashion trend, the popularity of a new product, or a drop in the crime rate. This widely acclaimed bestseller, in which Malcolm Gladwell explores and brilliantly illuminates the tipping point phenomenon, is already changing the way people throughout the world think about selling products and disseminating ideas.

Aged research makes questionable conclusions
Reviewed: 03-15-21
Overall this is a decent book, but it's very aged in some of the key components. Broken windows policing is now known to be one of the worst misunderstood social experiments ever done in policing, and was built off very bad data and tiny sample sizes. The Stanford Prison Experiment was corrupted from the start and should wholly be stricken from the record books as no conclusions whatsoever can be made from that bad science. Generally I think there are good points here, the way that social phenomena pick up speed and become viral and so on, but there is a great deal that needs to be revised.

Story
If there is one belief that has united the left and the right, psychologists and philosophers, ancient thinkers and modern ones, it is the tacit assumption that humans are bad. It's a notion that drives newspaper headlines and guides the laws that shape our lives. From Machiavelli to Hobbes, Freud to Pinker, the roots of this belief have sunk deep into Western thought. Human beings, we're taught, are by nature selfish and governed primarily by self-interest.

Enthralling story in a fantasy universe
Reviewed: 02-26-20
From the carefully constructed slang and language, to the steampunk vibes you get from the meticulously built science in this fantasy to the (of course) accurate portrayals of sword fighting and medieval fantasy, this first book from Shad Brooks is an amazing dive into a new universe. The performance is artful and makes you feel as though you're part of the story, and the depth of thought put into the background and science of this universe creates a stable base from which the story is built. My only MINOR constructive criticism is that the early few chapters can be slightly didactic, somewhat repeating some of the rules of the universe, but that fades away completely after a few chapters as you understand how dark stone works, how light binding functions, etc. For any readers who enjoy fantasy, this is a new must read! I look forward to future books!

Story
Bryan Stevenson was a young lawyer when he founded the Equal Justice Initiative, a legal practice dedicated to defending those most desperate and in need: the poor, the wrongly condemned, and women and children trapped in the farthest reaches of our criminal justice system. One of his first cases was that of Walter McMillian, a young man who was sentenced to die for a notorious murder he insisted he didn’t commit. The case drew Bryan into a tangle of conspiracy, political machination, and legal brinksmanship—and transformed his understanding of mercy and justice forever.

How did Fidel Castro fool the CIA for a generation? Why did Neville Chamberlain think he could trust Adolf Hitler? Why are campus sexual assaults on the rise? Do television sitcoms teach us something about the way we relate to each other that isn't true? While tackling these questions, Malcolm Gladwell was not solely writing a book for the page. He was also producing for the ear. In the audiobook version of Talking to Strangers, you’ll hear the voices of people he interviewed - scientists, criminologists, military psychologists.
