Story
Matthew Continetti gives a sweeping account of movement conservatism’s evolution, from the Progressive Era through the present. He tells the story of how conservatism began as networks of intellectuals, developing and institutionalizing a vision that grew over time, until they began to buckle under new pressures, resembling national populist movements. Drawing out the tensions between the desire for mainstream acceptance and the pull of extremism, Continetti argues that the more one studies conservatism’s past, the more one becomes convinced of its future.

Story
In The Lost Family, journalist Libby Copeland investigates what happens when we embark on a vast social experiment with little understanding of the ramifications. Copeland explores the culture of genealogy buffs, the science of DNA, and the business of companies like Ancestry and 23andMe, all while tracing the story of one woman, her unusual results, and a relentless methodical drive for answers that becomes a thoroughly modern genetic detective story.

A very thoughtful and thorough exploration.

A must read for anyone who is thinking about uploading their DNA to a consumer database. The author touched on every possible issue and controversy including: being surprised by a family secret, fourth amendment issues, eugenics, and identity politics. She also managed to provide a balanced view, and included many heartwarming stories of relatives who found each other and made lifelong friends. A fascinating read on a rapidly evolving topic.

Story
In this revelatory biography, Evan Thomas delivers a radical, unique portrait of America’s 37th president, Richard Nixon, a contradictory figure who was both determinedly optimistic and tragically flawed. One of the principal architects of the modern Republican Party and its “silent majority” of disaffected whites and conservative ex-Dixiecrats, Nixon was also deemed a liberal in some quarters for his efforts to desegregate Southern schools, create the Environmental Protection Agency, and end the draft.

Evan Thomas goes beyond the Nixon caricature to paint a nuanced portrait of a complicated man. The reader is left to marvel at the tragedy of an intelligent, driven man who reached the pinnacle of success, only to be brought down by his own insecurities and resentment. A compelling read.

Better than expected

The title is a bit sensational, so I expected a conspiracy theory-laced diatribe. Imagine my surprise, then, when I discovered a serious book with good history that discusses serious issues. It covers evolving plans surrounding the continuity of government (COG), as well as nuclear policy, plus a fabulous rundown on the history of Strategic Air Command (SAC), NORAD, and other Cold War institutions. A fabulous read for history nerds, preppers, and Cold War enthusiasts everywhere.

Story
The 2016 election was a watershed for the United States. But, as Tim Alberta explains in American Carnage, to understand Trump’s victory is to view him not as the creator of this era of polarization and bruising partisanship, but rather as its most manifest consequence. American Carnage is the story of a president’s rise based on a country’s evolution and a party’s collapse. As George W. Bush left office with record-low approval ratings and Barack Obama led a Democratic takeover of Washington, Republicans faced a moment of reckoning.

Great insights, painful truths

Wonderful interviews, lots of “inside baseball.” Some of the stories told are funny, others are shocking, but there are no anonymous sources. Tim Alberta does a great job highlighting the issues within the GOP. I don’t agree with all of his analyses (for example, he focuses too much on racist fringe), but he reveals deep flaws and a dark future for the Republican Party it changes are not made. He doesn’t talk much about the issues in the Democratic Party, so I had to stifle my “what about” reflex. Still, it’s a fun, insightful, and sometimes grim look at how the sausage is made in Republican politics.
