Determined to fit in at his New England prep school, the narrator has learned to mimic the bearing and manners of his adoptive tribe while concealing as much as possible about himself. Beautiful writing. Complex story, real and rich. Felt true tho I’m not a boy and have no experience of a private school. Not a thing to argue with here! I will listen at least once more.

Story
An ardent steward of the land, fearless traveler, and unrivaled observer of nature and culture, Barry Lopez died after a long illness on Christmas Day 2020. The previous summer, a wildfire had consumed much of what was dear to him in his home place and the community around it—a tragic reminder of the climate change of which he’d long warned.

Nothing. This is my first book by Lopez. I plan to read everything he’s written. Embrace Fearlessly is a manual for living.

Story
The wry and the heartfelt join in David Rakoff's prose to resurrect that most neglected of literary virtues: wit. As he finds himself in all the far-flung hinterlands of our culture, this fish out of water winds up satirizing himself more than his subject matter, to hilarious effect.

Funny, real, a great listen

Rakoff’s last few sentences speak about his incessant need to push away emotion and substitute it with wisecracks, but I couldn’t disagree more. His sensitivity comes through with every sentence, and I take in more with every re-listen. It is a tragedy he was not able to write more. Fraud and his other books are modern literary jewels.

From one of America's most talented historians and winner of a LA Times Book Prize comes a brilliant new account of Richard Nixon that reveals the riveting backstory to the red state/blue state resentments that divide our nation today. Told with urgency and sharp political insight, Nixonland recaptures America's turbulent 1960s and early 1970s and reveals how Richard Nixon rose from the political grave to seize and hold the presidency.

Interesting explanation of roots of current societal divisions.

Fascinating read! Hard to put down. Parallels to today’s extreme divisions are haunting. The narrator was excellent and read at a good pace with an easy-to-listen-to voice and appropriate expression. However he mispronounced some words such as Miss for Ms Magazine, ‘suede-o-nym’ for pseudonym, adjutant, and the names Adlai Stevenson and Solzhenitsyn. Because he was excellent in every other respect, I found the mispronunciations jarring. But overall I recommend this book without reservation and will listen to it again.

Story
The China Study offers conclusive evidence that a change of diet can dramatically reduce the risks of heart disease, diabetes, and obesity. The book is based on the most comprehensive study of nutrition ever conducted, a 20-year joint project between Cornell University, Oxford University, and the Chinese Academy of Preventive Medicine. The study surveyed the eating habits of 6,500 adults from all over China and Taiwan and found a direct correlation between diet and disease.

Would you try another book from T. Colin Campbell and Thomas M. Campbell and/or Stefan Rudnicki?
Probably not
Would you ever listen to anything by T. Colin Campbell and Thomas M. Campbell again?
Probably not
What do you think the narrator could have done better?
With the title "China Study," I expected a more scholarly work. Instead, the author spent a fair amount of text talking about how he fought against the establishment, how ignorant his fellow physicians were (are) about nutrition and health. That was not useful information to me. I wanted to know more about the research and objective findings.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Disappointment. I have seen the movie "Forks over Knives," which references Dr. Campbell, and expected a more in-depth treatment of that material. "Forks over Knives" was more interesting and informative to me.
