Story
Michael Pollan, known for his best-selling nonfiction audio, including The Omnivores Dilemma and How to Change Your Mind, conceived and wrote Caffeine: How Caffeine Created the Modern World as an Audible Original. In this controversial and exciting listen, Pollan explores caffeine’s power as the most-used drug in the world - and the only one we give to children (in soda pop) as a treat.

I can't fault the author's curiosity better Ng put into words, but I maybe would have preferred a series of blogs.

arguably the best of the 3 standalones
Reviewed: 12-16-22
My favorite of the standalones is Best Served Cold.
That being said...
This story centers on Shy, a close relative of one of all us First Law readers' favorite characters. Abercrombie masterfully weaves a tale of human character, and resolution, and regret, around her search to rescue her stolen siblings.
Don't expect a super fast pace. Also, this book probably introduces the least new characters (that survive). There are some meaningful heart wrenchers throughout. In fact, they may prepare you for those you'll have to endure in the following Age of Madness sequel series.
I've read nine out of the ten books at least TWICE!
I consider myself a somewhat hard critic and the First Law series is among my favorite contemporary fantasy universes. This story is an all too welcome addition.

Story
They say Black Dow's killed more men than winter and clawed his way to the throne of the North up a hill of skulls. The King of the Union, ever a jealous neighbor, is not about to stand smiling by while he claws his way any higher. The orders have been given, and the armies are toiling through the northern mud. Thousands of men are converging on a forgotten ring of stones, on a worthless hill, in an unimportant valley, and they've brought a lot of sharpened metal with them.

A bridge between two series
Reviewed: 12-10-22
This book serves nest as bridge between the first series and the age of madness (sequel) trilogies.
What happens in the north after the end of the union's wars? What happens to black Dow? What happens to the dogman? What of Bethod's sons? All this and more in this single volume.
Like all of the standalones, there are a lot of characters here that seem like they're not important to the overall plot, but are used masterfully to express moods, intentions, and expectations of the various standpoints in the world. Excellent world building.
Perhaps not super important to the overall First law universe, this book is still catharsis for those who love the world and the characters in it.
My personal favorite warrior in the series is Bremma Dan Gorst, who takes a pov role in this story.

Story
There have been 19 years of blood. The ruthless Grand Duke Orso is locked in a vicious struggle with the squabbling League of Eight, and between them they have bled the land white. While armies march, heads roll and cities burn, and behind the scenes bankers, priests, and older, darker powers play a deadly game to choose who will be king.

Maybe the single character in the most books
Reviewed: 12-05-22
If you're already a fan of the First Law series, then you'll love this book.
This book is largely about Shivers and his becoming the man who will eventually make a name for himself a second time.
But the main focus is on a renowned warrior on a crusade of revenge against those who tried to kill her and her brother.
Like all the stories in the First Law universe, it's not really for kids. It is for those who love great stories, intimately interesting characters, subtly comprehensive world building, and an excellent vocal performance!

Story
Eighteen-year-old Aidan Salt isn't a superhero. With his powerful (and unpredictable) telekinetic abilities, he could be one if he wanted to, but he doesn't. He's unambitious, selfish, and cowardly, and he doesn't want to have to deal with all the paperwork required to become a professional superhero. But since the money, fame, and women that come with wearing the cape are appealing, he decides to become the first supervillain the world has seen in more than 20 years: Apex Strike.

Pretty good story, somewhat refreshing

It was nice to enjoy this story about fairly genuine supervillains. The unfolding want too predictable. This story is not for kids. The powers and applications were fun too. I usually listen to pretty heavy stuff and this was a nice retrieve. I would definitely recommend it.

Story
Law professor James J. Duane became a viral sensation thanks to a 2008 lecture outlining the reasons why you should never agree to answer questions from the police - especially if you are innocent and wish to stay out of trouble with the law. In this timely, relevant, and pragmatic new book, he expands on that presentation, offering a vigorous defense of every citizen's constitutionally protected right to avoid self-incrimination.

Our Justice system needs a serious overhaul. Mr Duane outlines the ways several people have received harsh sentences despite their innocence. Done have even received the death penalty before their innocence was proven.
Do like I teach my children: ask for a lawyer, then shut up.
