Story
In the more shadowy corners of the world, frequented by angels and demons and everything in between, Laytham Ballard is a legend. It's said he raised the dead at the age of 10, stole the Philosopher's Stone in Vegas back in 1999, and survived the bloodsucking kiss of the Mosquito Queen. Wise in the hidden ways of the night, he's also a cynical bastard who stopped thinking of himself as the good guy a long time ago.

Almost full 5s, but ending is disappointing
Reviewed: 11-22-15
Loved the main character. Wish there were more with him available online. Ending seemed kind of quick/unsophisticated/thin after the rest of the story was pretty devoloped/thick.

Story
Mo's latest assignment is assisting the police in containing an unusual outbreak: ordinary citizens suddenly imbued with extraordinary abilities of the superpowered kind. Unfortunately these people prefer playing superpranks instead of superheroics. The mayor of London being levitated by a dumpy man in Trafalgar Square would normally be a source of shared amusement for Mo and Bob, but they're currently separated because something's come between them - something evil.

Good Laundry tale, but not great
Reviewed: 11-22-15
Some twists and turns are entertaining. This one kind of went overboard and then had kind of a crazy ending--didn't follow from the lead up. But, still wish their were more Laundry stories online like this from Stross.

Story
Undercurrents rise to the surface as Dell employs his mercenary soldier skills to follow the trail of a man who unwisely threatened his beloved wife, Dolly. This is a man with the deadly patience of a gila monster and a complex agenda: possibly the first partner in literature who tries to pass as a gay man, as a light-skinned person of color would have passed for white decades ago.

More like Burke, but not quite
Reviewed: 11-22-15
I wish their were more Burke books available. I like those bear, with Cross second. They have criminal friends that help and have personalities, too. Dell only has the "Ghost". Still, worth a listen if you like Vachss.

Story
Sonchai Jitpleecheep is back! The Royal Thai Police detective, our wily, sometimes madly bold guide through the author's previous acclaimed Bangkok novels, is this time on the trail of an American conspiracy and once again - and closer than ever - on the trail of his American father. With Sonchai on this case is the young female inspector, Krom. Like Sonchai, she's an outsider on the police force, but unlike him, she is socially savvy and a technological prodigy.

Really getting far afield for a detective
Reviewed: 11-22-15
I enjoyed all the prior books. This one was okay, too, but was not really about crime. Got way off the reservation into Vietnam-era black ops, etc. maybe interesting to older people from that era, but hard to relate to for anyone born after the early 60s.

Story
Daniel Carter used to be a homicide detective, but his last case - the hunt for a serial killer - went wrong in strange ways and soured the job for him. Now he's a private investigator trying to live a quiet life. Strangeness, however, has not finished with him. First, he inherits a bookstore in Providence from someone he's never heard of, along with an indignant bookseller who doesn't want a new boss.

Great concept, could have done so much with it
Reviewed: 11-22-15
The end of the book seems short-circuited. The story was great, but then wraps up and ends all of a sudden. Then everything is different with little explanation.
