On beginning this novel, I was put off by the fact that it was read by it's writer, I was, too quick to judge. Once I settled in, to the entrancing cadence of the author's voice , I could barely break away. It is a language and people I know, with values and ideals from my early life in the South. I enjoyed this book, like I enjoy a cool breeze in summer, unexpected but appreciated!

I don't believe I've ever heard of Dorothy Gilmore, or the Mrs. Pollifax series, but I will certainly look for more. Being of a certain age, I can completely understand and empathize with Mrs. Pollifax's desire to be stimulated and fulfilled. Taking on the things she did, was so brave and resourceful!
This was an entirely, enjoyable listen. I look forward to more books!

The emotional, vastness of this novel is difficult the articulate. I was in 7th grade, in 1969. I already wanted to become a nurse and serve. I had no understanding, at that age, the choking inequality that women were left to tolerate, rage against and battle, always! This book was like a flashback to all the injustices we lived through, during the years to date. Thank you, Kristen!

Story
It’s the night shift worker who finds them. Huddled in a hospital store cupboard is elderly Edith Higgins. Knifed to death. Sitting behind her is Staff Nurse Lily Frampton, a scalpel clasped in her blood-soaked hand. No one can understand why this kind-hearted, dedicated nurse would brutally murder a frail patient she’s spent months caring for. That same day, mild-mannered schoolteacher Rod Black is found surrounded by the battered bodies of his pupils. Why would a well-respected teacher beat five schoolboys to death?

Story
When a banished witch falls in love with the legendary trickster Loki, she risks the wrath of the gods in this moving, subversive debut novel that reimagines Norse mythology. Angrboda’s story begins where most witches' tales end: with a burning. A punishment from Odin for refusing to provide him with knowledge of the future, the fire leaves Angrboda injured and powerless, and she flees into the farthest reaches of a remote forest. There she is found by a man who reveals himself to be Loki, and her initial distrust of him transforms into a deep and abiding love.

I enjoyed the inside look, at an era I had avoided, because of it's repression of women and men. All things revolved around ones status, family connections and wealth. In short, similar to today's hierarchy of social media fame, stardom, etc.

Very hard to follow. The "story" is just different accounts of individual experiences being, or trying to discover what being an Indian means. Not a pleasant read/listen.
