What happened to Sam Dewhurst Phillips voice?
Reviewed: 08-20-24
The book as usual was very interesting but this time it was hard to listen to it. I have enjoyed listening to Sam Dewhurst Phillips narrate but this time his voice was gravelly, grating, and very irritating. I almost stop listening to it but decided to see if his voice would clear itself since I was interested in how the story played out. His voice was irritating throughout the story, the only exception was when Dewhurst Phillips did the other characters. The narrating and Lennox voice was gratingly annoying. His voice sounded like a character of an aging man on his deathbed. It definitely took away from enjoying the story. I plan to listen to the next book but if Dewhurst Phillips’ voice continue as it did in this book, I would not like to listen to any more books even though I enjoy the stories. A narrator can make or break the success of a book. Unfortunately, a narrator with an irritating voice can ruin an otherwise great book and many will miss the opportunity of listening and enjoying that book. I hope this doesn’t happen to this series because I do enjoy Menuhin’s excellent writing.

Story
There's a damsel in distress and accusations of attempted murder flying around, but it's not in the comfortable confines of the English countryside; it's in the very distant city of Damascus. Lennox must go and investigate, although he's not too keen on exotic locations, and his old retainer Greggs is distinctly averse to the very idea. Nevertheless, ex-Chief Inspector Swift persuades them, and they reach the ancient city to discover a movie crew, a spy, and a couple of mysterious ladies.

This book covered my two least liked subjects, spy stories and stories located in the Middle East. Because the book was well written and well performed, I continued to listen and finished the book. I did enjoy the humor and the overall story line involving Lennox, Percy, Swift, Gregs, and Mr. Bogg. I look forward to the next book and back in England.

Enjoyed this book despite the title

I hate Halloween and ghosts, etc. so I hesitated getting this book. I bought it with the idea that if it is ghoulish, creepy, and dark that I would return it. Surprise! It was just as intriguing, creative, and enjoyable as the previous books. I enjoy the humor among the mystery. This series is becoming one of my favorite series to listen to. For a while I have been searching for a new series because all of the series that I enjoy listening to have ended or are about to. I was beginning to worry that I wouldn’t be able to find any more series that I could enjoy. Karen Menuhin is an excellent writer. There are no dragging areas in the stories. The story continues to keep moving and the humor is great. I love Sam Dewhurst-Phillips in this series. His narrating makes the story and Lennox so right.

I forgot that I had bought this book and returned it because I didn’t like it and couldn’t finish it. I bought it and listened to it for the second time as if it was the first time. I stayed up all night listening to the story. I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was just as interesting as the first book. I don’t know where my mind was when I listened to the book the first time. The stories so far are very creative and imaginative. I have gotten to like Lennox in this story. He may be pompous but he is a caring person, who is often gruff because he feels socially awkward and clumsy. My heart went out to Lennox in this book. I enjoyed listening to the narrator. Sam Dewhurst Phillips makes the story come alive and enjoyable to listen to. I would like to continue to listen to this series.

It's 1920, and Christmas is coming. Major Lennox finds a body on his doorstep - why on his doorstep? Was it to do with the Countess? Was it about the ruby necklace? Lennox goes to Melrose Court, home to his uncle, Lord Melrose, to uncover the mystery. But then, the murders begin, and it snows, and it all becomes very complicated.

Surprising story for me

First time listening to a male narrator. Usually I don’t listen to stories narrated by a male because they cannot do a decent woman’s voice. It’s true in this story but the story was so intriguing and a surprise to me because the main character was the suspect that I tolerated that flaw. It was funny how the more he tried to convince the police that he wasn’t the murderer using reasonings that described the murderer, the more he was describing himself. The narrator reminded me of Fraser from the comedy tv series of the same name. This book has piqued my interest in the character and I will listen to the next book.

Story
Kate McGuire’s life was sweet in Manhattan before she lost her restaurant job and fiancé both. But sometimes that’s just the way the cookie crumbles, and soon she finds herself starting from scratch in the island town of Coral Cay, Florida. It has everything she’s looking for: sunny beaches, friendly locals, and a Help Wanted sign in the bakery shop window. Once she convinces the shop’s crusty owner Sam Hepplewhite to hire her, Kate can’t tie on her apron fast enough. Little does she know that trouble, like warm dough, is on the rise.

Not my kind of mystery story
Reviewed: 06-04-24
This book is not my kind of mystery because the story centered around the lives of the people in this tourist island town in Key West. The focus was on the cookies and pastries and not the deaths and the subsequent process involved in gathering information and the use of deductive reasoning in solving the who done it. The story was pleasant and enjoyable but finding out who was the culprit and proving it was a minor sideline of the story. If I was looking for the life in a small town story, this would be a very enjoyable story, especially with the different characters from various places that now live in the town. Christa Lewis did an excellent job on the various voices, male and female and from various countries. I enjoyed her narration very much. Eve Calder wrote an enjoyable story but it wasn’t really a mystery story. Needless to say, I will not be listening to any further books in this series. I will also stay away from any books with food as a title.

Another enjoyable book
Reviewed: 06-04-24
This was much better than the previous ones because they did some research for better knowledge in evaluating and eliminating suspects and who may be murdered next. It bothered me that in the previous books they just put on disguises and followed people around. They were such rank amateurs. But in this book, I think they are starting to develop their deductive abilities. That shows some sign of growth. This series may have good possibilities but they need to have their cases hold up well with the law enforcement world; catching the culprit is not the end of the story. In the end, it’s all only their words as to what happened. I will be listen to the next book, if there is another.
