Loved the book and learning about a part of WWII that I had never heard of. The voices, however, are very distracting.

This was a good book to listen to for the most part. At times, the author seemed to want to impress the reader with her large vocabulary and it seemed out of place. If you like this you should read Grandma Gatewood's book on walking the AT.

I was not immediately drawn in, but then I couldn't put it down! This book helps us to remember, everyone has a past and all of them aren't happy. I loved how Eleanor persevered.

This was an emotional story however I didn't get the feeling of a great love story between Kate and Johnny as was referenced at the end or all the good relationional stuff between she and Tully. Overcoming adversity seemed more apparent than the good times referenced. The characters weren't likable as a whole.

Most of the characters are unlikeable. 90% of this story is very dark and quite depressing. The narrator is difficult to listen to when speaking for the men.

I love the mix of Appalachian folklore and fiction in this book though I would prefer an Appalachain dialect from the reader.
