An interesting setting and tracking of the criminal
Reviewed: 12-28-24
Ms. Carnac/ Lorac demonstrates excellent writing, as usual. I had only listened to the MacDonald books before, which I thoroughly enjoyed. However, I enjoyed Rivers as the primary investigator, as well. The skiing setting was very enjoyable and interesting, even to appealing to me as a non-skier. David Thorpe, as always, does an excellent job narrating.

"The horror on the train, great though it may turn out to be, will not compare with the horror that exists here, in this house." On Christmas Eve, heavy snowfall brings a train to a halt near the village of Hemmersby. Several passengers take shelter in a deserted country house, where the fire has been lit and the table laid for tea - but no one is at home. Trapped together for Christmas, the passengers are seeking to unravel the secrets of the empty house when a murderer strikes in their midst.

A different kind of mystery
Reviewed: 12-17-24
This book was more of a “ what happened?” than a “who done it?” mystery. I thought it would be a bit of a” And Then There Were None,” but as another reviewer noted, the group grew in number. The characters were interesting, and even the “elderly bore” had some character development. I enjoyed the chorus girl’s diary entries, especially. The narrator did an excellent job with the various voices. I will look for more books by this author and for more audiobooks with this narrator.

A different kind of love story
Reviewed: 10-10-24
The first time I read this book, I wasn’t a fan because it portrayed a more serious situation and relationship, and less of the usual witty banter, than most of Heyer’s Georgian and Regency romances, and even of her murder mysteries. However, on my second reading (by audiobook), I enjoyed it more. The slow progression to affection and maturity that Adam undergoes is satisfying in the end. And I’d forgotten just how tiresome Julia was. He was well out of it! It is a lovely, gentle, slowly progressing love story that is more realistic than most. The narration is excellent, especially capturing Adam’s admirable self-control is many difficult situations and Mr. Crawleigh’s forceful personality. The female voices are well-done, also. Enjoy!

Reviewed: 08-08-24
This story is another well-written, fun mystery in the series. Listening to the excellent narration by Bernadette Dunne is like visiting old friends again. There was a little less interaction with her husband and kids, as well as with the quirky extended family, which I missed. Maybe they will be more involved in the next book. Regardless, it is a highly enjoyable story, especially with the perfect narration.

A thoroughly delightful series!
Reviewed: 08-06-24
After listening to the first book in the series, I thought it good, but a bit silly. After a while, I listened to the next book, and I was hooked. Then, I was able willingly to enter the world of Lady Hardcastle and Flo - their banter, particular brand of humor, and unusual relationship. I have laughed out loud many times, and replayed certain sections of dialogue to fully enjoy the clever writing and excellent narration. Elizabeth Knowelden is ingenious regarding her inflection and timing of phrases. Her narration of this series is one of those perfect marriages between narration and author that make listening to an audiobook a thoroughly enjoyable experience, as though listening to a radio drama than to someone reading a book, which some narration doesn’t manage to rise above.
I highly recommend this series. If you find the first audiobook a bit too “silly,” keep going. You will become a devoted fan, as well. Enjoy!

Another mystery with some favorite characters
Reviewed: 07-09-24
This mystery is set in Lennox’s own village, so his wife and the other members of his household are all involved in the events, as well as various residents of the village. Swift joins Lennox, of course, to investigate the murder, bringing his wife, son, and puppy from Scotland. I enjoyed the scenes with the two couples interacting, whether it be their learning the tango or discussing the case. A whole set of suspects are introduced, ranging from the quirky to the despicable, with a surprise culprit revealed (at least to me). This entry in the series is one of my favorites.
Sam Dewhurst-Phillips provides exceptional narration, as always. His narration and with this author make the perfect audiobook marriage. Please never break up!
I highly recommend any and all of the Heathcliff Lennox books, especially the audio versions.

Even better than the first two of the series….
Reviewed: 07-02-24
The series gets even better with this third entry. The mystery delves into international intrigue and secret societies a bit, reminiscent of some that Golden Age authors wrote, such as The Secret Adversary and The Sign of Four by Agatha Christie. Another lesser known author who did so in several of her books was Patricia Wentworth. In The Astonishing Adventure of Jane Smith, a young woman somewhat recklessly agrees to an adventure with such an organization. It is great fun, though certainly not as funny as BB’s version. I am recovering from knee replacement surgery, and these books have been a great distraction from the discomfort and sometimes outright pain. While listening late one night on my AirPods, I began laughing out loud at the “saucepan song,” waking up my husband. It was a little hard to explain out of context.
Mr. Blagden provided his usual outstanding narration. The only sad part is that the story ended, and I must wait until the next audiobook is released. I highly recommend this series, as well as the Lord Edgington series. (I have not begun the Izzy Palmer series as yet). Enjoy!

This second entry in the series is a good as the first. More is revealed about the childhood and adolescence that Marius and Isabella shared, but also about that of their larger group of friends, with serious results. Mr. Brown manages to inject his usual humor without being flippant regarding those negative consequences. Mr. Blagden continues to provide exceptional narration.

I love this new series! Dare I say it, I perhaps like it more than the Lord Edgington series. Marius is as endearing as the fledgling detective Chrissy in LE, and is even funnier. George Blagden does an incredible job of bringing the new characters to life. I am quite ready for Bella to figure out that Gilbert has to go and she still belongs with Marius. I suppose I’ll have to wait a few books for that to happen. I have read/listened to the first three books and eagerly await the next.
