An honest talk with an old friend….
Reviewed: 11-30-24
Life is complicated. Shonda took a hard look at her life and found she had slowly figured out how to follow the easiest path but, in doing so, she had lost her joy. By trying out a year of joining, saying yes to life, she was able to recapture what it means to be happy. She has decided to keep saying yes even if it makes for uncomfortable moments. It was a great, fun way to be reminded that you have to keep trying, you have to expose yourself and you have to keep saying yes! Life isn’t over, but living a life on autopilot is no way to live!

I truly enjoyed the weaving of present day with the past to tell the story of many adoptions in the 30’s - 50’s. It was heartbreaking to read about how children were taken from their mothers and families by deceit and then sold to knowing or unknowing families who could pay. The beach scenes seemed a bit over the top as far as believability in the “present-day” scenes of the book, but otherwise I learned a lot and enjoyed the story that came to light, I grew to love the characters, and I feel lucky to have been born into my family at the time that I did!

The story of one messed up family…
Reviewed: 03-17-24
I enjoyed this story, however, some of the scenarios were too incredible to be believed or relatable to my life. Kristen missed the mark with her character development as far as people being too good /smart/ dumb/ angry/ etc. The story was also somewhat too predictable. I was disappointed that, unlike many of Hannah’s other stories, this one was so forgettable.

A Glimpse into the lives of 15th Century Chinese Women both Rich & Poor….
Reviewed: 03-17-24
What an education about 15th century China! I loved the descriptions about the rules of society, the cultural norms, religion, as well as the typical daily lives of women living during these times. I enjoyed the development of friendship between an upperclass girl and a midwife’s daughter that lasted a lifetime. Being a woman was not an easy life for the rich or poor back then. Being a doctor and a woman was almost unheard of. How amazing that documents for that time still exist and inspired this novel of what might have transpired. Although the story was long, it was worth listening to!

Maine, 1789: When the Kennebec River freezes, entombing a man in the ice, Martha Ballard is summoned to examine the body and determine cause of death. As a midwife and healer, she is privy to much of what goes on behind closed doors in Hallowell. Her diary is a record of every birth and death, crime and debacle that unfolds in the close-knit community. Months earlier, Martha documented the details of an alleged rape committed by two of the town’s most respected gentlemen—one of whom has now been found dead in the ice.

Great story! Martha, the midwife, was a no nonsense woman with a family she loved and a community she felt the need to serve. I enjoyed that the author developed the personalities of each character in the novel with both strengths and weaknesses. A community whose population was neither heroic nor outright evil. The mystery at the center of the novel was well crafted and the results were both interesting and surprising. I thoroughly enjoyed this novel!

I loved this the character development of the young people in this book and the relationships they have with the adults in their lives. I could have done with less of the romance angle of the adults…. I felt it wasn’t important to the story.

Story
Kentucky, 1850. An enslaved groom named Jarret and a bay foal forge a bond of understanding that will carry the horse to record-setting victories across the South. When the nation erupts in civil war, an itinerant young artist who has made his name on paintings of the racehorse takes up arms for the Union. On a perilous night, he reunites with the stallion and his groom, very far from the glamor of any racetrack.

I learned so much about the importance/popularity of horse racing in the 1800’s as well as the influences of the people that raised these animals. The modern day storyline was a bit forced and preachy, however, all together a wonderful listen!

Story
In this illuminating and deeply moving memoir, a former American military intelligence officer goes beyond traditional Cold War espionage tales to tell the true story of her family - of five women separated by the Iron Curtain for more than 40 years and their miraculous reunion after the fall of the Berlin Wall. A personal look at a tenuous era that divided a city and a nation and continues to haunt us, Forty Autumns is an intimate and beautifully written story of courage, resilience, and love.
