Forget the Movie/Read This
Reviewed: 12-01-24
Dan Carlin/Hardcore History said this was an excellent book. It is.
The movie was like “Um, they went out when they shouldn’t have…okay.” Sad but what else did they expect?
It is so much more. It’s a tapestry of history, the fishing industry’s culture, a place where minutes matter, grit, community, regulatory deficiency, risk, hope, and loss.
The details around weather occurrences and storms was so interesting and terrifying.
I’m so glad I read this.

Story
It was one of the most searing images of the twentieth century: two young boys, two princes, walking behind their mother’s coffin as the world watched in sorrow—and horror. As Princess Diana was laid to rest, billions wondered what Prince William and Prince Harry must be thinking and feeling—and how their lives would play out from that point on.

What a baby!
Reviewed: 11-26-24
There’s this thing now where people feel that everything needs to be public. And Harry is just a big selfish baby to embarrass everyone. We were all here watching Diana, we watched her dad cheat, we watched his uncle be a total tool, there’s nothing secret. Him rubbing everybody’s face in it just to get paid is not helpful.
He married someone that stirred up enough confidence in him that he decided to trash his whole family and get paid.
We all knew that he had problems. He made extremely poor decisions in the past, like when he dressed up like a Nazi, which was inappropriate on so many levels.
I think he had some sort of mental problem the whole entire time. I think it’s difficult being in that family in the current times we’re living in, but I don’t think this book helped heal or repair or make it easier for anyone.
And for him to whine and cry now because he’s on the outs is just another example of his poor judgment. Instead of naming this book Spare, it should have been titled Spite.

Great read. It defines so many behaviors in ourselves and others with the “why did they do that?” It also clearly demonstrates the reasons why bad outcomes from repeated actions are hard to stop. But, you can with knowledge.

So at first, I thought wow this is insane. Then as you learn more about the author, t’s like okay …play with weird people, have weird things happen. She normalizes pretty outrageous stuff. Overall a good read, back in the early days of the Internet we were all more trusting. I am glad I ran across it—not a waste of time.

Story
From 1783, when German immigrant John Jacob Astor first arrived in the United States, until 2009, when Brooke Astor’s son, Anthony Marshall, was convicted of defrauding his elderly mother, the Astor name occupied a unique place in American society. The family fortune, first made by a beaver trapping business that grew into an empire, was then amplified by holdings in Manhattan real estate. Over the ensuing generations, Astors ruled Gilded Age New York society and inserted themselves into political and cultural life, but also suffered the most famous loss on the Titanic.

I love the history that is all around us in New York. I remember that I wanted to stay at the Waldorf-Astoria and when I finally made it there, it was so great to experience that history. I really loved reading about the family and all the things they did. Like so many of them it just wasn’t sustainable for modern times but there’s a glimmer of them everywhere in New York. I appreciated reading this a lot.

Story
How did the Wendels, one of New York’s most famous Gilded Age families, disappear from history? The Wendels built a fortune from New York real estate, and rubbed shoulders with the Astors, Vanderbilts, and Stuyvesants. But as the 19th century came to an end, the Wendel family tore itself apart. Following six years of painstaking archival research, Claire Prentice has prised open the door of the Wendels’ Fifth Avenue mansion—dubbed “the house of mystery” by the press—to reveal a fascinating and dysfunctional family imprisoned in a gilded cage.

Excellent research on this complicated family

I really appreciated this story because it’s such a strange family. It’s so interesting how they all just isolated themselves in so many ways and developed many strange habits across the whole group of them. I felt so sad for Georgie and her sisters. But even John was so bizarre, he never really got to enjoy life.
The thing about the whole family is they had so much wealth they could’ve had amazing experiences and helped so many others and done many many things but they just lived so small in the saddest way.
