A different western
Reviewed: 04-30-22
A western without cattle? It does have bad guys and good guys, horses, an OK story, mostly terse dialog, and even a romance. It doesn't much depend on the beauty or difficulties of the land, but highlights the foibles of its people. The author-narrator is excellent, and it is very, very easy to listen to.

Louis L'Amour must have spent a fair bit of time in the backwoods. His descriptions of the country, the effects of the weather and the loneliness of the back country are so apposite. Great story, good narration. What is not to like?

Great Louis L'Amour stories , well read. Easy to listen to, they have a particular charm - grim stories at times, but with a touch of humour and hope.

Story
In one swift moment, a fall wiped away his memory. All he knew for certain was that someone wanted him dead - and that he had better learn why. But everywhere he turned there seemed to be more questions - or people too willing to hide the truth behind a smoke screen of lies. He had only the name he had been told was his own, his mysterious skill with a gun, and a link to a half million dollars’ worth of buried gold as evidence of his past life. Was the treasure his? Was he a thief? A killer? He didn’t have the answers, but he needed them soon. Because what he still didn’t know about himself, others did....

Interesting. Quite a bit different than many of Louis L'Amour's works. But a good story, hard to pause for important things like work or dinner! Made really good by Stephen Mendel's narration, he got it just right.

Louis L'Amour writes a structured and well constructed story, gets the story together with some economy and wraps it up with the threads pretty much neatly tied. So it is with "Where the long grass blows, and Jason Culp makes the plot work really well.

An AI overseer and a human crew arrive on a distant planet to salvage an ancient UN starship. The overseer is unhappy. The crew, well, they're certainly no A-team. Not even a C-team on the best of days. And worse? Urmahon Beta, the planet, is at the ass-end of nowhere. Everybody expects this to be a long, ugly, and thankless job. Then it all goes disastrously wrong. What they thought was an uninhabited backwater turns out to be anything but empty.

Wanted to find this book to my taste, but struggled to finish. I wondered really what the author was smoking, as I found the author's universe on the drear side. Nevertheless, I think Nathan Fillion did an excellent job of the narration, giving considerable atmosphere to the tale.
