Knowing her wounds go beyond the physical, Laine hopes she'll fit in for a while and find her true self in a town that feels safe. She may even learn to open her heart to others, something an undercover agent has little time to indulge.

Real life issues as solved by characters in the stories of this series
Reviewed: 12-27-24
I like that the issues her characters go through are believable issues sometimes faced in real life and her characters deal with them. I could do without the accounts of sexual activities, prefer the “fade out” to feeling like voyeur in private times . So I just try to skip those discriptions

Story
Investigative journalist Laura Chambers is back in her tiny hometown of Hillsborough, North Carolina, the one place she swore never to return. Fired from The Boston Globe, her career in shambles, she reluctantly takes a job with the local paper. The work is simple, unimportant, and worst of all, boring - at least until a missing girl turns up dead, the body impeccably clean, dressed to be the picture of innocence. Years earlier, 10-year-old Patty Finch left home and never made it back. But for the people of Hillsborough, Patty was just the beginning.

Story
A mysterious virus has infiltrated the good people of Lake Wobegon, transmitted via unpasteurized cheese made by a Norwegian bachelor farmer, the effect of which is episodic loss of social inhibition. Mayor Alice, Father Wilmer, Pastor Liz, the Bunsens and Krebsbachs, formerly taciturn elders, burst into political rants, inappropriate confessions, and rhapsodic proclamations, while their teenagers watch in amazement. Meanwhile, a wealthy outsider is buying up farmland for a Keep America Truckin' motorway and amusement park.

I love the stories of the midwest , much like where my late husband grew up.
Reviewed: 08-21-24
Garrison is a favorite as my husband and I used to listen to to his radio show. It reminded him of his childhood home in North Dakota. And to me it was about a place of dreams and fantasies so unlike my troubled traumatic childhood in California. His voice is restful and almost hypnotic, listening is delightful and a great stress relief.

I liked the whole story and felt it helped me see the place my grandfather came from, and where I have unknown distant relatives. He was from the mountains in western North Carolina . Ive always liked some of the music that seems to have a Celtic feel. Ive always loved mountains. But Ive also always hated prejudice against other folks. This story touched a chord in my soul.

Story
At the end of the Second World War, Cyril Conroy combines luck and a single canny investment to begin an enormous real estate empire, propelling his family from poverty to enormous wealth. His first order of business is to buy the Dutch House, a lavish estate in the suburbs outside of Philadelphia. Meant as a surprise for his wife, the house sets in motion the undoing of everyone he loves. The story is told by Cyril’s son Danny, as he and his older sister, the brilliantly acerbic and self-assured Maeve, are exiled from the house where they grew up by their stepmother.

When the crows gather over a remote Navajo Reservation in the deep Southwest, it is a sign that the thin veil that separates our world from the one beyond is about to open. Without a barrier between life and death, things pass between both worlds. Some of them are good. Most of them are not.
