Story
Mercer Mann, a popular writer from Camino Island, is back on the beach, marrying her boyfriend, Thomas, in a seaside ceremony. Bruce Cable, infamous owner of Bay Books, performs the wedding. Afterward, Bruce tells Mercer that he has stumbled upon an incredible story. Mercer desperately needs an idea for her next novel, and Bruce now has one. The true story is about Dark Isle, a sliver of a barrier island not far off the North Florida coast. It was settled by freed slaves three hundred years ago, and their descendants lived there until 1955, when the last one was forced to leave.

Believable Story
Reviewed: 10-07-24
As usual, John Grisham hit the mark again. I like his style, varied character personalities, and the underlying themes/messages that pertain to real issues.
The modern story was believable, contained historically accurate material, and was a tribute to those who suffered tremendously in the early years of America's racial wrongs, The element of a justifiable curse was a nice touch. The story was well-written and flowed well. The setting and use of same characters was fitting. Goldberg's reading took some getting used to and was ok, in fact, good and appropriate at times. I had to re-listen many times because I was pulled to sleep by Ms Goldberg's soothing, sometimes monotonous, voice. The previous reader of Camino Island and Camino Winds used more variations in voice for each character and I liked that a lot.

Story
On an island off the coast of Ireland, guests gather to celebrate two people joining their lives together as one. The groom: handsome and charming, a rising television star. The bride: smart and ambitious, a magazine publisher. It’s a wedding for a magazine or for a celebrity: the designer dress, the remote location, the luxe party favors, the boutique whiskey. The cell phone service may be spotty and the waves may be rough, but every detail has been expertly planned and will be expertly executed.

Well written, well read mystery. Even if you figure out who is going to get it, its hard to figure out by whom! Great setting and establishment of mood! I like the format...unusual to have varied perspectives and flashbacks combined.
Very Enjoyable...I had to return to the last few sections to listen again!

Why all the hype???

I personally did not like this story; too much like post Bernie Sanders’ “social democracy” experiment!
First, I’m not much into futuristic stories, that I can’t imagine (or choose not to contemplate) as realistic, especially including masochistic or emotionally sadistic themes. I prefer to think about why things are as they are and how they came to be that way- and how we can overcome them!
I admit I didn’t finish - stopped about 1/2 to 2/3 - almost a year ago- and I’ve not been compelled try again (Much like trying to get through “the English Patient” but for other reasons. It’s just too weird for me. I didn’t watch the televised series either!
I hope it ended happily for some worthy character; the main one?
Maybe I’ll pull it up again and finish it out of curiosity - I haven’t forgotten what I did read so maybe that’s an indication!

Story
The incomparable master of the legal thriller takes us deeper into the labyrinth that is the American justice system, always drawing us in with an irresistible hook, pulling the thread of tension tighter and tighter, and then knocking us out with a conclusion that's never "by the book". Maybe that's why, after more than 20 years of consecutive number-one New York Times best sellers, a new novel by America's favorite storyteller is still a major publishing event.

Another Entertaining Grisham!

I thought the narrator was quite good, in contrast to a few other reviewers. Since I know little about courtroom law proceedings or law practice, never having been there, it was interesting. The topics of big pharmaceuticals and also product safety were quite interesting - and timely. Something to which most of us can relate, and, of which, depending on our health and experiences, have strong opinions. Much humor, interesting personal side stories - all together inspires me to the next good Gresham and compels me to give 5 stars!

Grisham has again spun great fiction out of realistic, deeply detailed conspiracy. This novel prequel adds emphasis on the criminal injustice of ruining individuals, families and community of an already misunderstood, almost ravaged and greatly persecuted group for the benefit of some conniving, soulless, and immoral persons in our world. JOhn Grisham does more that write great books; he has a point and provokes thought...every time on varied topics....I've read them all!

An innocent man is about to be executed. Only a guilty man can save him. Travis Boyette is such a man. In 1998, in the small East Texas city of Sloan, he abducted, raped, and strangled a popular high-school cheerleader. He buried her body so that it would never be found, then watched in amazement as police and prosecutors arrested and convicted Donté Drumm, a local football star, and marched him off to death row.

If you love small town American football, are proud of kids who find success in it, despise dime a dozen criminals who, although occasionally attempt to right their wrongs, eventually get what's due, and love a human (and innocent humans) interest story that turns out good- then read and listen on!
I LOVE John Grisham's stories- have from the very first! - Like all others, this provokes thought, entertains, subject matter is relevant, the truths and irony are clear! Selfish humans will ALWAYS provide topics into which JG thoroughly delves; he never fails to deliver!

Mark, Todd, and Zola came to law school to change the world, to make it a better place. But now, as third-year students, these close friends realize they have been duped. They all borrowed heavily to attend a third-tier, for-profit law school so mediocre that its graduates rarely pass the bar exam, let alone get good jobs. And when they learn that their school is one of a chain owned by a shady New York hedge-fund operator who also happens to own a bank specializing in student loans, the three know they have been caught up in The Great Law School Scam.

Crowing Loudly for the Rooster Bar

Performance was great! Believable and defining character voices. How many of us take the time, and have sufficient motivation, to uncover the real rat, when we smell it? The perpetual incidences of hustling seemed infinite, BUT, because I'm a lover of John Grisham novels, I hung in there knowing the impact loomed; hustles showing the diverse magnitude of the hole these desperate characters were digging! And to no avail....it set-up the victims' necessity of turning the tables on the perps and programs gone awry.....deservingly so!
(Not that we should break laws to accomplish exposure and retaliation - but it does make for daring action.)
For anyone who loves a good story, particularly a well-woven Grisham story- especially we who scoff at the ridiculously enormous student loans (wolves in sheeps' skin) and subsequent mountainous and often abandoned debt OR we who loathe the real slick lawyers, used car salesmen, fund investor/managers and the like, hustling non-suspecting innocents just trying to get ahead in life.
