Story
The refugees from the Empire have established a thriving city called Haven with the help of the Tayledras and their allies. But the Tayledras have begun a slow withdrawal to the dangerous lands known as the Pelagirs, leaving the humans of Haven to find their own way. But even with Haven settled, the lands around Haven are not without danger. Most of the danger comes in the form of magicians: magicians taking advantage of the abundant magical energy in the lands the Tayledras have cleansed; magicians who have no compunction about allying themselves with dark powers and enslaving magical beasts.

The narrator is outstanding. I really enjoyed listening to this and the previous two books in this series. My only problem with the book is that it had to end. I could have listened to this one for a very long time.

Story
The company of the Ring is torn asunder. Frodo and Sam continue their journey alone down the great River Anduin - alone, that is, save for the mysterious creeping figure that follows wherever they go. This continues the classic tale begun in The Fellowship of the Ring, which reaches its awesome climax in The Return of the King.

But his contentment is disturbed when the wizard, Gandalf, and a company of 13 dwarves arrive on his doorstep one day, to whisk him away on a journey "there and back again". They have a plot to raid the treasure hoard of Smaug the Magnificent, a large and very dangerous dragon.

I've always loved the story, and now I have a wonderful reading of it by the great Andy Serkis. Of course his reading of Gollum is wonderful, and I found myself getting giddy when it was time for the Riddle Game. But the way he read the rest of the story drew me in so much that many times I felt like I was in the story. Now to listen to Andy's version of The Lord of the Rings. It's got to miles beyond the Rob Inglis narration.

Gabra is a very good reader. Unfortunately there one specific word she consistently mispronounced: "mage." It started grating on my nerves once I realized what she was saying. She pronounced it like the word "mad" with a "g" instead of like "may" with a "g." Did she even bother to look it up?

Some pronunciations were wrong.
Reviewed: 04-25-21
Some readers need to learn how to pronounce such words as "duchy" and "geas". They're pronounced "dutchy" not "ducky," and "gesh" not "ghee-es." Also, I sometimes had difficulty understanding which character was speaking because the reader would do similar voices for them, particularly if they were male voices. But it was not so bad that it made me not want to listen to the story.
