Well narrated and well thought out. The author purposely evades the deeper technical discussion but doesn’t treat the listener like a moron which is a delicate balancing act for this topic.

Story
Why we think it’s a great listen: You thought he was a stodgy scientist with funny hair, but Isaacson and Hermann reveal an eloquent, intense, and selfless human being who not only shaped science with his theories, but politics and world events in the 20th century as well. Based on the newly released personal letters of Albert Einstein, Walter Isaacson explores how an imaginative, impertinent patent clerk became the mind reader of the creator of the cosmos.

My first Walter Isaacson biography and I couldn’t stop listening. You get to know Einstein as a very human but also endearing person outside of his achievements and by doing so understand his work all the better.

For most of the last hundred years, Biloxi was known for its beaches, resorts, and seafood industry. But it had a darker side. It was also notorious for corruption and vice, everything from gambling, prostitution, bootleg liquor, and drugs to contract killings. The vice was controlled by small cabal of mobsters, many of them rumored to be members of the Dixie Mafia.

I’ve not listened to or read John Grisham in a very long time so it was to my great surprise and delight that I found this story so many years later. It’s clear he has evolved as a storyteller but still loves to use the law as the setting. There wasn’t a dull moment and the characters were fantastic.

Even though the science can be a little opaque at times in the first few chapters overall a very thorough and well documented exploration of the COVID origin. More importantly it emphasizes the need to talk about facts in a highly partisan time.

Story
For those who could read between the lines, the censored news out of China was terrifying. But the president insisted there was nothing to worry about. Fortunately, we are still a nation of skeptics. Fortunately, there are those among us who study pandemics and are willing to look unflinchingly at worst-case scenarios. Michael Lewis’ taut and brilliant nonfiction thriller pits a band of medical visionaries against the wall of ignorance that was the official response of the Trump administration to the outbreak of COVID-19.

Good idea, flat narration

I’ve read or listened to all of Michael Lewis’ books give or take. This one left me working to enjoy it and I chalk a lot of that up to the passionless, flat, monotone narration. I quit 30 minutes before the end and I don’t think I missed anything.

What happens when the President of the United States governs one Tweet at a time? When the elected leader of the free world may not have a firm grasp on the names of government agencies, much less an understanding of their intricate inner-workings? In the days following the 2016 inauguration, government personnel searched for answers that didn’t exist, while White House staff scoured halls for employees who would never be appointed.

I’m a huge Michael Lewis fan and have read or listened to most of his work all the way back to Liar’s Poker. This one is a pass. Narration is ok and story line is a little soft. May hurt that I listened to the audible selected short of it but don’t think that’s the case. Looking forward to his next work.
