Life is Like a Box of Chocolates
Reviewed: 10-22-24
This is a fun story about a woman who is down on her luck and pulls herself up to remake herself. She thought life would be one way and found out that you never know what you're going to get. What I really liked was how real Ivy was. She was not the "perfect" heroine. She was flawed but recognized it. In the end she comes out on top. Not the way she thought she would but on top, nonetheless.

We all want to be needed and have purpose. Helen Cartwright has come to terms with the fact that she has outlived her usefulness but a small creature enters her life and shows her that purpose comes in many forms. Given a new lease on life, Helen and Sipsworth form an unusual and committed bond. Really enjoyed seeing Helen's evolution during a one week period of time. Just a good uplifting story.

The first book of this series was really good. Enjoyed getting to know Kiera Darby. She's a woman who resides with her sister and husband after the death of her anatomist's husband. Her marriage leaves her with a scandalous reputation, not of her doing - but who in society believes that! Now a murder and who do you think the group thinks is the culprit? So, now it's up to Lady Darby to prove her own innocence with the help of the inquiry agent, Sebastian Cage. On to the next book in the series.

Another winner for Kay Scarpetta. Fingerprints at the scene of an executed convict. Fingers pointing at Kay as a logical suspect. Niece Lucy gets the chance to help solve the case. This one had lots of twist and turns that kept you guessing to the end. Love this series.

I can usually stay focused on the story even when I'm multi-tasking (cooking, cleaning, etc) but I had a hard with this one. I do think this will be a good series and this first short was to let us know how Dr. Bairstow got things started at St. Mary's. I will continue on.

Some say the great mystery of how one can live in two worlds at once died with Thomas Hunter many years ago. Still others that the gateway to that greater reality was and is only the stuff of dreams. They are wrong. In the small town of Eden, Utah, a blind girl named Rachelle Matthews is about to find out just how wrong.

A Spiritual Journey
Reviewed: 08-25-24
I am blind but now I see. Rachelle Matthews is a young, blind girl in a small, off-the-gird town. She has dreamed of Shadow Man her entire life. Now her dreams have become the true reality and she is the one to bring truth to her small community. She must find the 5 seals to do this but how can she, a young, blind girl be capable of such great feats. As she transforms from darkness to light we see how the world's perception begins to be altered. While this is book does present parables for the Christian scriptures, I see it as a spiritual journey. Guess it is all in perception. This book does end on a cliffhanger, so you will need to be prepared to move on to the next one to see how this journey concludes.

Story
In his wickedly brilliant first novel, Debut Dagger Award winner Alan Bradley introduces one of the most singular and engaging heroines in recent fiction: Eleven-year-old Flavia de Luce, an aspiring chemist with a passion for poison. It is the summer of 1950 - and a series of inexplicable events has struck Buckshaw, the decaying English mansion that Flavia’s family calls home. A dead bird is found on the doorstep, a postage stamp bizarrely pinned to its beak. Hours later, Flavia finds a man lying in the cucumber patch and watches him as he takes his dying breath.

Love this Kid
Reviewed: 08-15-24
This was so fun. I'm sure it is a YA but who doesn't enjoy a precocious 11 y.o. Flavia is a great kid who is way too intelligent, can hold her own with any adult and knows how to put clues together to save her father from murder charges. I listened on audible and the narrator, Jayne Entwistle, was exceptional. I think I'll read some more to see what kind of mischief Flavia gets into.

Ten years ago, Grace saw something that would forever change the course of history. When evil in its purest form is unleashed on the world, she and others from their religious community are already hidden deep in the hills of Tennessee, abiding by every rule that will keep them safe, pure - and alive. As long as they stay there, behind the red perimeter. Her older brother's questions and the arrival of the first outsiders she's seen in a decade set in motion events that will question everything Grace has built her life on.

Anti-religion
Reviewed: 07-26-24
I really enjoyed this. I wasn't sure if I would. I'm not much for christian based books. I don't want to be preached to. But this book was more spiritual than religious. It took a hard stand against the ugliness of "religion" and how easily people can be persuaded it it's in the name of "God." It looked at faith through a more spiritual lens - dark vs light, fear vs love, good vs evil. We have all seen or heard of cults who have persuaded their followers through using God, the Bible, or Jesus to support their ideals. This had a dystopian vibe using suspense, and with a little bit of supernatural to create the story. It was interesting to watch Grace evolve from a scared, inverted girl to a woman of light who faced her fears and stood for her faith and defeat her "fury." I will probably read more of Dekker's books.
