The performance is so terrible, it does not so justice to the story. I recommend you read this instead of listen.

The author has a thick Northern accent, but it's not unpleasant, in fact, I thought his performance was reasonably good. If you have this available at your local library, then it's worth giving it a go to see if you like it better than I did, but overall, I doubt this book will appeal to most of its intended audience. I, for one, will be returning this book.

Really, I moderately enjoyed the first hour or two. I would listen to it while walking in my neighborhood and it was meandering but evocative. However, somewhere near the mid-point I began to lose interest in part due to finding the author unappealing personally. This was not immediately the case. Initially, I enjoyed his discussion of the landscape, Brontë stones, poems, walks, etc. but I think it was in chapter 5, Mr. Earnshaw's walk that the author started to veer off in a different direction... it was turning more into a pessimistic walking memoir rather than musings on the Brontës. The profanity also picked up quite a bit, and I found it jarring and unwelcome, though I like to think I am a fairly tolerant reader.

As it is, since I am preparing to go visit Haworth and the general area, I am abandoning this to focus instead on finishing Juliet Barker's biography and rereading the Brontës' works. I highly recommend the same to you instead of this book.

I have been recommending this story (especially the audiobook) to whomever I can! We listened to it as a family on a road trip and fell in love with the robots—Fly was a special favorite.

The performance is great and the story is delightful. My kids have been listening to it again while doing chores :)

Very, very happy with this performance of a fascinating book. It's a little difficult at first to keep the two Marys straight, but over time I got it.

Few writers and performers could do justice to such an epic story, but Lansing and Prebble do so. I will be recommending this to everyone I know and will definitely be listening to it again. I couldn't help but weep at the conclusion. An amazing book.

My children (6 and 4) and I listened to this on a road trip and were completely delighted. At first I wondered if the Scottish accent would be a problem for their understanding, but it was no problem. The performance is excellent with individual voices for all of the characters—my kids especially love the grandfather—and even though it is about the legendary Loch Ness it is presented in such a realistic way...it seems as though it could happen to a real child! My children loved it and I did, too.

Tim Robbins' masterful narration was the perfect companion to Bradbury's skill as a writer and storyteller. I had never read this novel before and have highly recommended it to many. My husband also listened to it and enjoyed it thoroughly. Still an important message decades later.

I have read Anna Karenina twice, and this performance is very well done. Gyllenhaal's voice, in my opinion, is not by nature suited to audiobooks. However, I think she did a great job.
