Story
Clare Cassidy is no stranger to murder. A high school English teacher specializing in the Gothic writer R. M. Holland, she teaches a course on it every year. But when one of Clare’s colleagues and closest friends is found dead, with a line from R. M. Holland’s most famous story, “The Stranger”, left by her body, Clare is horrified to see her life collide with the story lines of her favorite literature.

Engaging characters, flat ending
Reviewed: 11-27-24
I just discovered Elly Griffiths’ writing! I enjoyed this book overall: engaging characters, good descriptions, clever misdirections and an inventive plot! There were some plot holes that had me saying such exasperated things aloud as “Just put a security camera on Clare’s house why dontcha?” IMO as an audio book it went on way too long. I lost some interest in the whole thing after about hour 9, and there were still several more to go. However, this might not be as big a deal in print book format. And the ending felt pretty flat, though I’ll admit I did not guess the murderer. But maybe that’s because the readers weren’t given enough actual clues? The “scary story” within the story was actually not very scary and I slightly resented having the whole thing repeated at the end.
However, there was some very good stuff in this. And great narration! Will try more in the series

Super pleasant, a mental vacation

Light yet deep writing, beautifully read. It just burbles along. Some of the class prejudices in the second half of the book are dated and a bit sad. Putting that aside, it’s a gem of a novel!

Story
The scene of this entertaining story is laid in a charming English village. The plot centres round Miss Barbara Buncle, a maiden lady who was obliged to write a book because – as she naively explained – her dividends were so poor. Unfortunately, Miss Buncle had no imagination, so she wrote about her friends – quite kindly and truthfully, of course, for she was a benevolent and veracious soul.

Loved the story, full of unexpected moments! The characters are so masterfully drawn, and the drama and humor exactly right. The tale just burbles along enchantingly to its satisfying denouement! The reader is an artiste, and did book this perfectly, brava! If I could give this book six stars I would.

It’s amazing what bodily injury can do for a man. A fall from a racehorse left brilliant jockey Sid Halley dangerously depressed, with a wrecked hand and the need for a new career. It was a bullet wound that helped him find one.

Interesting plot with lots of great side details. Such as the great sensitivity shown to the emotional toll of physical differences. I disliked the amount of sadism and brutality in the book, just skipped over as much of that as possible.

So interesting to see the daily life of a 1960’s English stable lad through this protagonist’s eyes! That was the best part. The plot seemed overall a bit thin and the criminals were almost Dickensian caricatures. Beautifully read, made everyone come alive!

I enjoyed the characters and the settings. Possible spoiler: I was surprised that there wasn’t a more obvious solution to the romance issue, i.e. that of the hero turning out to be unrelated to the heroine by virtue of his mother’s extramarital activity. Too bad! The first cousins thing is a little off-putting TBH, tho possibly that’s a cultural prejudice.

Story
Steeplechase jockey Derek Franklin has had more broken bones than he cares to count, but it seems his latest injury could very well bring his days on the race course to a screeching halt. But that’s the least of his concerns when his brother turns up dead, leaving Derek as the sole inheritor of his estate. It doesn’t take long for Derek to learn that his brother—a magistrate who imported and sold semiprecious stones—was keeping more than his share of secrets.

I really enjoyed learning a little about the gem trade and also the whole feel of the business environment. A bit unusual for DF and truly interesting! The puzzle-master aspect was also intriguing. I disliked the constant pain and violent attacks repeatedly suffered by the hero who shook it off with ridiculously cool aplomb. Detracted from what was otherwise a really great story, IMHO

Story
Society believes the worst of Justin Alastair, the notorious Duke of Avon. When he encounters a young boy, Léon, who is running from his abusive brother, Avon employs the boy as his page, parading him around parties and other society events in full view of his bitter rival, the Comte de Saint-Vire. But the truth is soon uncovered: Léon is a girl named Léonie and is actually the legitimate child of the Comte and his wife. While Avon is intent on his plan to reveal the Comte’s duplicity and ruin him, he is charmed by Léonie’s kindness, falls in love, and becomes a changed man.

An enjoyable listen
Reviewed: 10-06-24
Inventive plot, interesting characters, skillfully read. Listening to it rather than reading it (as I’ve done before) I was struck afresh by a few slightly icky things. The Duke’s pose as an Evil Man “bwahahaha” is unsupported by any behaviors in this book , so just comes off as a sort of juvenile pose. I was also unimpressed by the class prejudices revealed so neatly in this tale, “breeding will out, don’t you know.” And of course the male love interest is exactly twice the age of the female, awkward. Setting aside these cavils, it’s a lively romp!

Survival Suspense
Reviewed: 09-24-24
I like how Francis can weave a cast of characters so deftly and believably. Within the first few introductory sentences his characters live and breathe. This plot was unusual for Francis, in that it centered on a writer, and survival techniques. What I didn’t like? The tie-in to horse racing was at first plausible, then almost of course this writer turns out to be a talented jockey too. Not believable and not actually necessary to the plot line, so why? Not sure when this was written but there’s also an antiquated attitude towards women which borders on the offensive, and in which some women even get punished for their “over sexuality.” Unpleasant. No romance, the hero is emotionally rather cold and cerebral.
However, suspending the distasteful aspects, overall a decent story, very well narrated, more suspense than action. People who love survival shows etc will really enjoy it.
