Similar to Kate DiCamillo
Reviewed: 09-03-24
This one felt as if I was reading a children’s story and reminded me a lot of Kate DiCamillo. It was a nice, quick break from some of the heavier reading I had just finished. It took me an hour or so to get used to the author’s very abbreviated style. The sentences all felt very condensed and choppy. Overall, I liked the storyline, but some aspects were underdeveloped which might be inevitable in such a short book. There were several moments I felt the author pushing his own convictions/ agenda in a way that that wasn’t consistent with the characters or plot. Those kinds of checkboxes are rampant in modern literature and a personal irritation for me as a reader. All in all it was a sweet story of an elderly woman discovering her purpose as she re-connects with a world she had all but left.

Best Galbraith so far

I didn’t love Ink Black Heart (mostly because I don’t think it translated well to an audio format). Consequently, I was hesitant about Running Grave- especially considering some of the themes of abuse. However, Rowling’s gift for storytelling is especially apparent in this addition to the Cormoran Strike series. I don’t feel like the parts of the story that veered into abuse were at all gratuitous. I’m not sure what the audio equivalent is to a “page turner,” but this was it.

August 1939: London is dismal under the weight of impending war with Germany as Hitler’s forces continue to sweep across Europe. Into this uncertain maelstrom steps Grace Bennett, young and ready for a fresh start in the bustling city streets she’s always dreamed of - and miles away from her troubled past in the countryside. With aspirations of working at a department store, Grace never imagined she’d wind up employed at Primrose Hill, an offbeat bookshop nestled in the heart of the city - after all, she’s never been much of a reader.

Story
The modern audience hasn't had a chance to truly appreciate the unknowing dread that readers would have felt when reading Bram Stoker's original 1897 manuscript. Most modern productions employ campiness or sound effects to try to bring back that gothic tension, but we've tried something different. By returning to Stoker's original storytelling structure - a series of letters and journal entries voiced by Jonathan Harker, Dr. Van Helsing, and other characters - with an all-star cast of narrators, we've sought to recapture its originally intended horror and power.
