Story
In her international bestseller SPQR, Mary Beard told the thousand-year story of ancient Rome. Now she shines her spotlight on the emperors who ruled the Roman empire, from Julius Caesar (assassinated 44 BCE) to Alexander Severus (assassinated 235 CE). Emperor of Rome is not your usual chronological account of Roman rulers, one after another: the mad Caligula, the monster Nero, the philosopher Marcus Aurelius.

Story
In this fascinating and thought-provoking book, author Nick Lane brings together the latest research findings in the exciting field of mitochondria research to reveal how our growing understanding of mitochondria is shedding light on how complex life evolved, why sex arose (why don't we just bud?), and why we age and die. This understanding is of fundamental importance, both in understanding how we and all other complex life came to be, but also in order to be able to control our own illnesses, and delay our degeneration and death.

Mitochondria update
Reviewed: 10-23-23
This extensive update on mitochondria links me to my 1961 biology studies in college and to those 1965 physiology lectures in medical school. So much to learn back then before becoming a practicing M.D. Now finally in retirement I find the time to read Lane's exhaustive exploration of mitochondria. Lane's book makes up for a general neglect of this critical cell structure and its life giving function throughout the animal kingdom. Unfortunately no illustrations, so go to Wikipedia.

Story
Byron and Hitler were equally entranced by Rome's most famous monument, the Colosseum. Mid-Victorians admired the hundreds of varieties of flowers in its crannies and occasionally shuddered at its reputation for contagion, danger, and sexual temptation. Today it is the highlight of a tour of Italy for more than three million visitors a year, a concert arena for the likes of Paul McCartney, and a national symbol of opposition to the death penalty. Its ancient history is chock full of romantic but erroneous myths.

Story
The Inflation Myth and the Wonderful World of Deflation illustrates our rapidly changing world where constant technological innovation leads to cheaper and better products. These changes are no longer reflected in the ways we measure inflation. Renowned investor and author Mark Mobius persuasively argues that what we believe to know about inflation today does not reflect the reality any longer. It is a myth, a legend, a fable, and, yes, a falsehood for a number of reasons.

This subject is not a science and Fed's Powell magic potion is just one of hundreds. You can hike rates till the cow's come home but don't expect overnite results. It's is always an experiment. Praying for desired changes may work just as well as jacking up interest rates. But for sure, I have received from the author a wealth of information about the deflation-deflation dilemma and does me more good than what is daily trotted out by Fed's, Wall St and politicians. At least the book teaches readers, there are no quick fixes.

This programme explores the fertility of his musical imagination and his deep but unconventional religious faith.

Found this E.B.White freebie after 30 plus hours listening to Sherman's memoirs. If I suddenly lost my ability to read or listen, White's writings would be my choice before my downfall. There is no hubris, and if the reader has any, White will drain every bit out of you. Then inflate you with just the right amount of humility.

Tide. More than a soap in a book awash with details of tides.
Reviewed: 03-02-22
Most are fooled into believing they "know" about tides from trips to the beaches and occurrences of coastal flooding. This book uncovers the scientific complexity of tides, complextity that interconnects every facet of the earth's geography, atmosphere and astronomical relationship with moon and sun. To don't get beyond the mere beach tides and their timing for beach combing and other mundane usage of tide information. Try getting your mental feet wet by combing to this book. Lot too scientific to absorb but try sloshing through like I did and leave in awe of what rocks our planet.
