I guess the Onion is on Audible now..
Reviewed: 07-17-23
I saw the Onion on audible for the first time. On their website, they have the show and I guess this is an excerpt from that. Although the Onion has gone from having full scale video production to an audio production, but good to see them expanding to Audible.

Story
When Orwell went to England in the 30's to find out how industrial workers lived, he not only observed but shared in their experiences. He stayed in cramped, dreary lodgings and subsisted on the scant, cheerless diet of the poor. He went down into the coal mines and walked crouching, as the miners did, through a one- to three-mile passage too low to stand up in. He watched the back-breaking, dangerous labor of men whose net pay then averaged $575 a year.

Great introspection into the working class
Reviewed: 12-30-22
I liked both the first and second parts of this book. The brutal mining conditions described in the first part are historically enlightening. Orwell makes some interesting points in the second half about moving towards democratic socialism and in a sense primitivism.
Frederick Davidson's narration was great! Easy to follow, and easy to speed up at some places.

Good read
Reviewed: 09-03-21
This book tries to go into the depth of Cheryl's mother's death and how everyone around Cheryl dealt with it in Cheryl's eyes. Not all mentioned in the book is real, which leaves the reality in a mystery. In contrast to Wild, the pace of the story is very slow and detailed, and not very eventful, but a great read!

While reading this book, I am in a low zone as I find myself struggling to become a responsible adult (with investing money, making decisions for future, investing time in myself and not wasting it all playing videogames all day). This book has helped me come up with a plan to build long lasting habits and cope with the possible boredom from execution of these habits. The book contains simple method to make your habits stick with a lot of real world examples. The author also provides a lot of resources on his website that are helpful after reading the book.

How the Wild Effect Turned Me into a Hiker at 69: An Appalachian Trail Adventure

Story
This is a terrific audiobook. It's interesting, well-written, and timely. It's the story of a textbook editor who retires, reads the popular book The Wild Effect and decides to hike the Appalachian Trail - and have an unexpected adventure! The tone is wry humor, tongue in cheek - the author has a great sense of humor, is perky, and as she learns in this adventure, is often in over her head! She is a very likeable character.

This book is about Jane's hike of the Appalachian trail with her friend Myles. If you expect a Wild - style book with reflections into author's life from the trail, this is not it. The author goes into great details about the specifics of the trail, and her journey. It might get boring soon if you expect a lot of reflection into the author's life just like Wild.

Story
The wisdom within these pages has the power to unlock our potential as a species and establish an enduring civilization based on peace, self-ownership, and nonviolence. You, as a free, beautiful, independent human being with inalienable rights, own yourself! You can do what you want with your own body and the product of your labor. All human interactions should be free of force and coercion, and we are free to exercise our rights, limited only by respect for the rights of others. Governments rely on force, and force is a poor substitute for persuasion.

Good critique of centralized state
Reviewed: 01-26-21
The book provides a great critique of centralized government and how the government can control it's citizen and create diversions while profiting and becoming rich. Although, this book doesn't really discuss how to fix all the problems it describes other than specifying the need for more local government.

Story
At 22, Cheryl Strayed thought she had lost everything. In the wake of her mother's death, her family scattered and her own marriage was soon destroyed. Four years later, with nothing more to lose, she made the most impulsive decision of her life: to hike the Pacific Crest Trail from the Mojave Desert through California and Oregon to Washington State - and to do it alone. She had no experience as a long-distance hiker, and the trail was little more than “an idea, vague and outlandish and full of promise.” But it was a promise of piecing back together a life that had come undone.

OK, before I write anything else, I must say this isn't like 1984 or Animal Farm, but it definitely is political fiction. The book revolves around Gordon who is a poet and rebel of capitalism. He wants to rebel against capitalism by working a low paying job and write great poems. It's a great read! I enjoyed the narrator too with the English accents!
