This series was well worth listening to. While listening to the first book, I was wondering where the fantasy parts of the story was, but it showed up later. The character building was excellent! Really enjoyed.

As I listened to the first few chapter, I stopped several times to go back to the start. After repeating these steps, I looked up if this was book 2 or 3 in a series to justify my confusion but no. This is book 1 in a series. There isn’t any character or scene building at all. You jump right in a climatic scene without any reference as to what is going on and who’s who. This is the most confusing book I’ve ever listened to and it’s not an enjoyable way to start a storyline. Disappointing!

I’ve been struggling, as a lot of people have, with racing thoughts. I had turned into an anxious wreck, and felt helpless to stop the self destructive thoughts that have plagued me over the last four years. This book not only gave me hope that I had the ability to shift this persistent, internal strife but - I could stop it now! I’ve felt so much inner peace since listening to this book. I’m not saying a miracle occurred but, it FEELS so close to one. I haven’t felt this happy in a long time. If you’re also having anxiety issues, this book is well worth listening to and implementing. You won’t regret it!

It’s okay

First, the performer is amazing! She really is talented and I’ve enjoyed listening to her tell this story.
The story itself is…well, okay. I’m an avid fantasy reader and this isn’t one I’ll recommend to others as a must read/listen to. I’m halfway through the book and while the narrator is fantastic, she’s the only reason why I’ve listened to the book this far in. The premise of a Nordic fantasy book was so appealing to me, but it ultimately fell flat. I found myself not caring or even liking the two main characters (Freya and Bjorn). They’re just okay people - not exceptional characters and I stopped trying to care about their story. The author is clearly talented but, this read just didn’t garner excitement or enthusiasm at any point from me. I’m putting it aside halfway through. While this is my experience, it may appeal to someone else that enjoys a slow burn of character development and storyline.

Book four out of five in the Black Witch series
Reviewed: 05-31-24
Books 1 & 2 were so good, I binged listened and immediately ordered every available book! By book 3, the story took a turn and expanded supporting characters stories. Okay - different but the storyline was moving forward. By book 4 - I’m nearly done and may not buy book 5. This series could’ve ended at book three, if the main story (characters) were followed. Book 3 diverted quite a bit from the main storyline (characters) with book 4 nearly completely devoid of the main characters. The main plot is dragging out so much at this point it’s frustrating. There is too much supporting character development with diving into their own storyline that it distracts from the main story - and the reason why I purchased the books in the first place. While the author is a great storyteller- I’ve never been so frustrated with a series. I’ve felt like skipping whole chapters just to get past the supporting characters storylines that don’t add much at all to the main storyline. It seems books 3 and especially book 4 with the additional supporting character storylines are more about extending the series to sell more books than a necessary part of the series.
