Story
I Am, I Am, I Am is Maggie O'Farrell's astonishing memoir of the near-death experiences that have punctuated and defined her life. The childhood illness that left her bedridden for a year, which she was not expected to survive. A teenage yearning to escape that nearly ended in disaster. An encounter with a disturbed man on a remote path. And, most terrifying of all, an ongoing, daily struggle to protect her daughter - for whom this book was written - from a condition that leaves her unimaginably vulnerable to life's myriad dangers.

This is a magnificently written memoir in the form of the author’s many brushes with death. She reads it really beautifully and it was a great lesson. Highly recommend.

Important book for all parents
Reviewed: 08-05-20
This book brings up an important aspect of our hovering parent culture and how our best intentions for our children are backfiring. Ben Sasse (wasn’t familiar with him before) is an obviously brilliant thinker but he talks straight and clear. Important to consider his suggestions for how to raise self- reliant, confident adults.

Margaret Trudeau, former wife of Pierre Trudeau, 15th Prime Minister of Canada, mother of Justin Trudeau, Canada's current Prime Minister, and international mental health advocate, brought her intimate staged performance, Certain Woman of an Age, to the Minetta Lane Theatre, where it was recorded live for Audible Theater. In this "fearless and vulnerable" (Chicago Tribune) one-woman show, Trudeau opens up - with refreshing candor - about her extraordinary life and her encounters with some of the most important icons of our time.

Interesting story, performance a little heavy- handed . Story itself had some gaps- what was it like to get divorced to a public figure? What was a the second divorce about? What is her life like now living with treated bipolar disorder?
Interesting enough for an hour but could have dug deeper for a story that could have been compelling.

Compelling writing, great narrating. Needed a good edit. I found many of the characters (friends and girlfriends of “Son”) unbelievably naive right up to the end. Interesting story, be prepared to be disgusted, creeped out , and- if you’re a woman- being extra careful in the dark.

Story
In 2011, when she was in her late 50s, beloved author and journalist Joyce Maynard met the first true partner she had ever known. Jim wore a rakish hat over a good head of hair; he asked real questions and gave real answers; he loved to see Joyce shine, both in and out of the spotlight; and he didn't mind the mess she made in the kitchen. He was not the husband Joyce imagined, but he quickly became the partner she had always dreamed of. Then, just after their one-year wedding anniversary, her new husband was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

Lovely memoir of late love and caretaking

This book is really special in many ways. The beginning is not great- dating stories that are kind of shallow- but it picks up when Joyce meets her man. A sweet tale of love, loss and taking care of her soulmate through his illness.

The war brought immediate, life-changing shifts: the rationing of meat, dairy products, and sugar; an explosion of war-related jobs; and, despite mixed signals, a greater role for women working outside the home.

A bit too private for this genre
Reviewed: 01-01-20
Claire Tomalin is a beautiful writer , but for a memoir I felt she was too reserved and private- about her kids, her second marriage, her managing career with children, etc. There were nice tidbits here and she has no doubt had an interesting life but I wished for more detail. Great narration from Penelope Wilton, whose dry delivery always seems to be holding back a smile.

In The Madness of Crowds Douglas Murray investigates the dangers of ‘woke’ culture and the rise of identity politics. This is my first foray into Douglas Murray’s writing and thinking. It won’t be my last. He is obviously brilliant and measured, scholarly in his approach but compelling to listen to. This book is truly perspective- changing and he is also a fantastic narrator. A dry sense of humor shines through his writing and narration. Highly, highly recommend for anyone trying to understand what is going on in mass culture today.
