Story
English magicians were once the wonder of the known world, with fairy servants at their beck and call; they could command winds, mountains, and woods. But by the early 1800s they have long since lost the ability to perform magic. They can only write long, dull papers about it, while fairy servants are nothing but a fading memory.

Narrator did an excellent job! This story is winding and chock-full of detail but the epic journey is worth it. absolutely fascinated by this world and these characters.

I'll admit to being a post-Netflix listener! This was totally brilliant. Anne is "tenderness itself" and the narration captured all of Austen's wit and charm.

Story
Aged 13, Theo Decker, son of a devoted mother and a reckless, largely absent father, survives an accident that otherwise tears his life apart. Alone and rudderless in New York, he is taken in by the family of a wealthy friend. He is tormented by an unbearable longing for his mother, and down the years clings to one thing that reminds him of her: a small, strangely captivating painting that ultimately draws him into the criminal underworld.

Beautifully narrated and beautifully written. There were some desert-like sections where the plot... just... slows... down, but then Tartt always makes it worth it, makes those sections symbolic of depression and mourning so you feel like you're right there with Theo. I think Hobie is my favourite character ever (and Boris my least-favourtie... but he grows on you in the end, like a cute virus). Really enjoyed this. Worth the credit.

How wonderful! Such a worthwhile purchase. Yes, the audio quality could have been better, but like all super-long audiobooks, your ears just adapt. The quality did not stop me enjoying the story or the wonderful narration. The narrator used so many different voices which made the massive scope of the story much easier to understand.
One trigger warning is that the "n" word does appear in this story, when comparing the shine of a black leather boot to the skin of a person of colour. Yes, this word is a product of its time and Dumas' historical context, but I still found it jarring and awful. It drew me out of what was, overall, a stunning story.

Matches the series perfectly
Reviewed: 01-20-21
I tried listening to “Alias Grace” before watching the series but became very confused – Atwood’s constant inclusion of letters and jumping around in the story is a bit difficult to wrap your head around in audio-form. However, after having watched the series, I decided to give it another go, and I absolutely loved this book despite knowing what was coming. I’m super impressed that the series creators were able to capture, almost perfectly, the whole vibe of this story. Absolutely excellently narrated. Loved it!

The unapologetic intensity with which Emily Brontë wrote this story ensures that it will forever be considered one of the greatest works of English literature. A passionate tale of a chaotic and often violent love, Wuthering Heights transcends your average romance and, with its Gothic undertones, takes the listener on a journey through one man's lustful hunt for revenge.
