Story
The island of Iwo Jima was the epic land and sea battle that produced one of the iconic images of WWII: the Marines raising the American flag on Mount Surabachi, an active volcano that was the site of intense hand to hand combat. In this gripping novel, P. T. Deutermann follows a young gunnery liaison officer, Lee Bishop, who during the ferocious battle for the island is pulled from his station aboard the USS Nevada to serve onshore as a spotter, calling in coordinates for the ship to target with missiles.

20,000 Japanese troops resist 100k strong amphibious force!
Reviewed: 12-12-24
Simple put - the Japanese had years to fortify defenses that survived naval bombardment prior to amphibious landings - that includes 16 inch naval guns from battleships. Each 16” round weighs the same as a VW bug or 2000 pounds! This story gives a first person account of when “valor was an uncommon virtue.” Great read.

Great story - the Korean War is commonly referred to as the forgotten war and unfortunately, rightly so. Not many books out there about it. Like, did you know that America has fought the Chinese before, and it was bloody! This story gives a snapshot following the chosen valley loss - highly recommend this book

In the years since the Vietnam War, the elite unit known as SOG has spawned many myths, legends, and war stories. Special Forces medic Joe Parnar served with SOG during 1968 in FOB2/CCC near the tri-border area that gave them access to the forbidden areas of Laos and Cambodia. Parnar recounts his time with the recon men of this highly classified unit, as his job involved a unique combination of soldiering and lifesaving.

Story
Author Doug Beed relates his memories of the men and missions during his year (1968-69) as a combat soldier with the First Infantry Division in Vietnam. After two years of college he couldn't afford to continue, so he was forced to relinquish his student deferment and enter the draft. He tried various strategies to get a non-combat job; nevertheless, he ended up in the infantry and was assigned to Vietnam. The stories in this book depict the year Doug spent in Alpha Company, where he spent days on patrols finding and killing North Vietnamese soldiers.

Told from the view of a grunt trudging through the knife grass and blood sucking leeches of Vietnam. Read this book and the next time you see an old guy wearing a hat with the words Vietnam over rows of ribbons you’ll want to pay his back or shake his hand. The author takes you to those jungles, the firefights, loss, friendship, the fine line of fear and rage, and finally an understanding which leads to healing invisible wounds.

Story
In the early morning hours of April 1, 1970, more than four hundred North Vietnamese soldiers charged out into the open and tried to overrun FSB Illingworth. The battle went on, mostly in the dark, for hours. Exposed ammunition canisters were hit and blew up, causing a thunderous explosion inside the FSB that left dust so thick it jammed the hand-held weapons of the GIs. Much of the combat was hand-to-hand. In all, twenty-four Americans lost their lives and another fifty-four were wounded.

Well written and narrated. Building off the background of those men and elements engaged in a fight or die struggle, the author uses after action accounts filled with heroic actions and horrific aftermaths. An interesting and educational documentary on a little known and covered up forward firebase close to the Cambodian boarder. The research behind this book is nothing short of outstanding - right down to what happened to the men after the war (I call it like it really was). I’d definitely recommend this audiobook

Here is the story of a good soldier trained to be part of an elite team of warriors - and of the killing grounds where he was forever changed. Gene Michaels carries an M-60, 800 rounds, and a Bible. The ultimate SEAL, he also carries a murderous grudge against a bloodthirsty colonel who was once one of their own.

Ahhhh, this is a must read.
Before picking this read I checked the reviews and totally disagree with those that were negative. SEAL Teams from the days of Vietnam were the forefathers of Teams today. They wrote the lesson plans in blood and passed on a legacy for those that follow. So those few, the little few negative reviews didn’t get it - and sadly - they may never get it. What drives a man to subject himself - or now, what drives a woman, to put it all on the line? Why would anyone become a SEAL? Patriotism first, then come challenge, the come most importantly than all - the brotherhood of those that choose to serve with you! Nope - I’m no SEAL, but I stayed at the Holiday Inn Express and read this book. HooYah Men In Green Faces,” thank you for both defending freedom and for making our enemies fear the night while the innocent safely slumber in peace. Highly recommend this audiobook.

Sharpe's mission had seemed simple: capture a small unguarded French coastal fort, cripple Napoleon's supply lines, and retreat across the sea. But behind the lines, Sharpe's old enemy, Pierre Ducos, awaits Sharpe's arrival with a battalion of French soldiers and a vicious commanding general who keeps the scalps of his dead enemies as trophies.

Sharp’s saga models the British wit and perseverance that stares in the face of adversity. The story line in this book flows well and keeps listeners on the edge as the chapters evolve to a climactic ending. Except, is the ending? Will the villain show up again to revenge on Sharp for exposing him? Will Sharp prove that the villain can be killed? I recommend this book as well as others in the series to find out.
