This book serves as an excellent reminder of the power of a sociological perspective! It broadens our lens to see what broader forces were at play to bring about often undesirable outcomes. I loved the book!

Such a creative revision of a classic! I really enjoyed the book! Perhaps it says something about the power of culture, but I just couldn’t even fantasize that Huck and Jim had that different a relationship OR that there would be such a difference between slave jargon and reality. Still, an enjoyable read!

I thoroughly enjoyed this memoir, primarily because the author made consistent connections between her answer to the question “what happened to me” from birth through elementary years and her later successes in life . I would love to know how she was able to recall specifics!

Even the novel within the novel was good! A truly well written book that beautifully describes the Black middle class dilemma among other things. I will say though, the the ending was less satisfying than the ending in the film American Fiction.

An excellent, in-depth examination of a specific company’s attempt to make something in America at a time when political and global trends worked against it. A bit too much detail for my taste—The main idea could have been made without them.
Still, an important contribution to our understanding of what happened to get us to this point where almost nothing is made in America.

Clearly a great deal of work in describing the global and geopolitical variations in patriarchy. But there didn’t seem to be a connecting theme. I found myself thinking when I finished

Desmond has again given us a sharp, frank discussion of what has been assumed to be a permanent problem in society: poverty. This is one of the growing number of works that remind us it doesn’t have to be this way.
