Life couldn’t get much worse, until it does. One morning on the way to work, Styvie hits a 16-year-old, Dharma, with her car. When the injured girl flees the scene, Styvie finds that she can’t leave well enough alone.

If you like similes every other sentence then this book is like the chocolate teapot of your dreams.

I told myself that if I heard another bad simile in the next minute I’d turn it off.
It is off now, like a cheap prom dress in the backseat of your mom’s car.
Narration does not seem to fit characters’ age.

Story
Raina Bretton is a rag woman in London's East End when a handsome stranger appears in a dank alley and offers her a glittering smile and a chance for adventure. Rothburne Abbey has a unique position for her, one that will take her away from her hardscrabble life and give her a chance to be a lady. Things she could only dream of might be coming true. But some dreams turn out to be nightmares. Though Raina has traded squalor for silk and satin, something about the abbey is deeply unsettling.

Life’s too short to spend here. Uninteresting Cinderella story. Unlikely abilities of characters. This is not the fantasy section.
Writing not thoughtful or varied. I wound up focusing to see if she used AND in each sentence or just every other one (character did this AND did this. Character did this AND thought that). Then started to count adverbs…

One is living hand to mouth, suffering at the hands of a violent partner who would rather see her dead than leave him. You may think you know these women already and how their lives will unfold. Beth will live happily ever after with her little girl and her soulmate. Cath will go back to her abusive husband. And these two women will never cross paths. But you will be wrong.

Good, tough subject matter

Great narration. This story in the series has much harder subject matter. I did fast forward through a few parts as they went too far for my taste (like closing your eyes in a gruesome part of a movie). Still good plot and great listen.

Story
One sunny August afternoon, the residents of Cedar Close throw their annual summer barbecue. Children play in the cherry-tree lined street, tables are laden with food, and the wine is flowing. For Laurie Mills, it’s her first time meeting the neighbours. And it’s the first time she discovers her husband, Robert, is having an affair. Cedar Close has always been a nice place to live - a quiet suburban street where everyone looks out for one another and bad things don’t happen. Until late one evening, when Robert Mills is found dead in his bedroom.

There’s a reason it was free… I stopped listening
Reviewed: 03-01-23
I stopped reading this series and won’t finish. I may never actually pick up another one of her books…
I stopped reading due to the unnecessary violence against animals. Just feel it was unneeded for the story and a cheap device.
I have read everything from Phillips Gregory except her Wildeacre series. The set came up for free as an anniversary or their release. I abandoned reading near the beginning of this second book. Won’t finish this, or the third.
Characters are all terrible, shallow, and without actual, well, character. The only likable one is the doctor, whom we’re not supposed to like.
